According to figures released by Halton police Wednesday, Oakville saw the second-highest number of impaired driving charges laid within the region with Burlington coming in first with 123 impaired driving charges. Milton came next with 49 impaired driving charges while Halton Hills came last with 36 charges. Police said these statistics are disap- pointing particularly when the laws surrounding impaired driving send a strong message that such activity will not be tolerated. For a first offence a driver will have their licence suspended for a year and pay a fine of no less than $1,000. After the year suspension the driver, at their own expense, will have to install an Ignition Interlock System on their vehicle. For a second offence the driver will have their drivers licence suspended for three years and face imprisonment for no less than 30 days. At the end of those three years the driver, at their own expense, will have to install an Ignition Interlock System on their vehicle. The driver will also have to participate in a Back to Track Course for 11 months. For a subsequent offence the driver will face imprison- ment for no less than 120 days. Police will also be empowered to compel participation in roadside physical coordination tests if they have reason- able suspicion that the driver of a vehicle has consumed a drug or alcohol or a combination of both. Halton police also point out that upon conviction for impaired driving the driver will receive: A permanent criminal record that may prevent entry into certain countries Possible job loss or possible denial of future employ- ment Possible classification as a high risk driver and either be forced to pay an increased insurance rate or risk the pol- icy being cancelled altogether All of this does not even include the potential injury and loss of life of the driver or someone else, which can occur because of impaired driving. Halton police point out that of the 13 traffic fatalities recorded in Halton this year alcohol was a contributing fac- tor in four of them. Police are providing residents with the following tips to avoid becoming another statistic. Dont risk it If you plan to drive-dont drink Choose a sober designated driver before partying Take mass transit, a taxicab or ask a friend for a ride home Spend the night where the activity is being held Report impaired drivers to law enforcement Always wear your seat belt-its the best defence against an impaired driver. Two road safety campaigns that dovetail in their mes- sage are happening this month. The Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Halton Region Chapters Project Red Ribbon is designed to com- bat impaired driving during the holidays. The red ribbon is a symbol of a person's commitment to drive safe and sober during the Christmas season and throughout the year. MADD says that an average of four Canadians are killed and 200 more injured daily due to alcohol and drug-related crashes. MADD Halton is asking local residents to tie a MADD Canada red ribbon to the antenna, side mirror or other vis- ible location on their vehicle or on their keychain. MADD Canada ribbons are available in locations across Halton. Project Red Ribbon runs until the first Monday after New Year's.
