Police were called to the store at 11:07 a.m. The mans arms, which were crushed in the accident, were freed with rescue equipment known as the jaws of life, police said. The 21-year-old suffered serious injuries to both arms and was taken to hospital, where he was treated for multiple fractures. The Ministry of Labour attended the scene and is investigating the incident. The cardboard compactor has been removed from service by order of the ministry. Arm crushed by cardboard compactor Daniel Mitropolsky, a Grade 12 Appleby College student, won the Ontario Qualifier Tournament for the National Public Speaking Championships held recently at the college Mitropolsky 's win earns him a spot as the first representative on Team Ontario when competing at the National Public Speaking Championship in Winnipeg in February 2011. I first began debating in Grade 9 through my participation in Applebys Model United Nations program, where I experienced dis- cussing and debating political and internation- al issues, said Daniel. I greatly enjoy the chal- lenge of debating, specifically parliamentary- style. Winning the tournament was an exhila- rating experience and I look forward to what the future holds as I prepare for Nationals. Thirty-two students participated in the qualifying tournament hosted at Appleby College, representing various schools from across Ontario, as well as debating and public speaking leagues. Events included impromptu speaking, par- liamentary debating and persuasive speaking. More than 30 volunteers acted as judges. Mitropolsky will be joined by fellow Appleby College student David Hakim who came in fifth place and who will also be attending Nationals in February as a member of Team Ontario.
