Blades sweep weekend pair Hornets earn third win of year By Kevin Nagel METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP Jordan Kotsopouloss dream season with the Northern Kentucky University mens soc- cer team reached a cli- max on Saturday when the Norse won the NCAA Division II cham- pionship. After pulling out a 3- 2 win over Floridas Rollins University in the middle of a snowstorm in Louisville, Ky., centre midfielder Kotsopoulos was picked as an all- tournament player. I had no idea they announced me for the all-tournament team, said the freshman. I was too into the idea of being a national cham- pion. I felt as if I finally got a good sense of recognition in the NCAA. I was very happy and proud. With a large contingent of family, friends and a former coach in the stands, Kotsopoulos was stunned to see two of his best friends, Tyler Masur and Michael Lopes, in the mix. They had trav- elled by car to surprise him. As soon as I saw my whole family and two best friends in the stands, I knew I was going to play well for them, he said. NKU took an early 2-0 lead but Rollins came back to tie the score in the second half. The winning goal skipped under the hands of the Rollins netminder with visibility a hin- drance because of the conditions. One of the (Rollins) players said he had never seen snow before, said Kotsopoulos. The Oakville Soccer Club product con- tributed to NKUs sec- ond goal when he drib- bled around one defender and crossed it into the box from a dis- tance, creating a scramble and in turn a 2-0 NKU lead. When protecting the lead late in the game, midfielder Kotsopoulos, team captain Steven Beattie and teammate Michael Holder kept Rollins pinned in its own end of the pitch by shielding the ball and forcing throw-ins and corner kicks. This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, said Kotsopoulos. We will be celebrating for a long while.
