The Venom, in its first year together, defeated Newman Youth 35-30 in a hard- fought championship game. Newman Youth, from the Hamilton region, was ranked fifth in Ontario last year. Members of the Venom are Adriana Picone, Alexa Duric, Alisa Ermarkarayan, Arianne Soriano, Aryn Sidhu, Christina Morra, Fiorella Turbino, Katie Thom, Madison Trpcic, Payton Hughes, Rachael Catahan-Niles and Tori Cramm. Mike Hughes and Brandon Trpcic coach the team, which is managed by Lisa Morra and Giovanni Morra. The Oakville Venom atom girls won a basketball tournament last weekend in Flamborough. Oakville's Scott Zeron drove Spiritinhereyes to a wire-to-wire victory Saturday at Flamboro Downs to record the 1,000th victory of his career. Zeron is just the fourth driver in Canada to reach the mile- stone before his 22nd birthday. Zeron, who turned 21 in May, tops the Canadian leaderboard with 570 victories this season and is among the top five in North America. His father, Rick Zeron, a longtime driver and trainer, has more than 7,200 wins since beginning his career as a driver in 1977. Dagys named soccer all-star Karly Dagys was recently named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's All- Louisiana college women's soccer team. Dagys, a sophomore forward at Southeastern Louisiana, was named to the All-Southland Conference team last month. She led the conference with nine assists and added six goals, including four game win- ners. Dagys was also second on the team in shots on goal with 29. The Holy Trinity grad had eight goals and four assists in her fresh- man season. The Lady Lions were 15-3-3 overall, including a 7-1-1 mark in conference play to win the regular season title. Halton second at Spectator Classic Despite 13 points from Loyolas Marti Killeen and 10 from Holy Trinitys Samantha Ernest, the Halton all-stars fell 65-44 to the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic all-stars Wednesday in the final of the Hamilton Spectator All-Star Classic basketball tourna- ment.
