The family also decided to turn the fun into an opportunity to help others as well and so they also took up a collection for Fareshare. Last year, they collected 200 to 250 lbs of food from friends, neigh- bours and a few strangers too. All in all, I'd say we had about 300 (with a spike one night of about 75 people after a neighbour wrote to the Toronto Star) people come to watch the display with many more slowing their cars as they passed, said McCombe. Learning from what worked last year, this year the display has grown and will continue to do so in the years to come, said McCombe. The contributing family mem- bers are McCombe, his wife Erin, his mom Marg and brother Sean. My parents moved to Oakville about 24 years ago and moved into the same house that my mom and brother live in today, said McCombe, noting he and his wife also recently bought a home in Oakville. Now as hydro and its rising cost is more often than not hogging the limelight these days, McCombe said hes built that consideration into his plan. At last count, we had about 3,500 lights (up from about 2,200 last year), he said. As for hydro, this year we've made an effort to switch many of the lights (about half at this point) to LEDS to reduce power consump- tion. When the show itself is not running, we reduce the number of lights on at any time to about a third, which is similar to the Christmas lights we'd have put up anyway, said McCombe. Its the music however that makes the show. This years concert consists of music that includes: Richard Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra; Mavis Staples Christmas Vacation; the Trans Siberian Orchestras Christmas Eve Sarajevo and Wizards in Winter; The Whoville Whos Welcome Christmas; Straight No Chasers Christmas Can Can; Brenda Lees Rockin Around the Christmas Tree; Loreena Mckennitts The Bells of Christmas; Gayla Peevys I Want a Hipppotamus for Christmas; Boney Ms Marys Boy Child; The Muppets Jingle Bells and Jingle Bell Rock; Eric Johnsons The First Nowell; and, Michael Bubl Let It Snow! In his work with local families in difficult situations, he has discov- ered the holidays can leave many people feeling less than festive. That is why Trafalgar Presbyterian Church is aiming to help those feeling overwhelmed this Christmas with its seventh annual Blue Christmas evening service on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The service will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Christmas service is an opportunity to step away from the music and parties. We welcome anyone who needs hope and help, or even just some quiet time for reflection in the midst of a busy sea- son, said the churchs minister Rev. Kristine OBrien. OBrien hopes the quiet evening on the longest night of the year will offer refuge to those who are coping with feelings of sadness or anxiety. The annual service, now in its seventh year, is free and open to everyone. Visitors may remain anonymous if they wish. To reach Trafalgar Presbyterian Church (905-842- 2800 or www.trafalgarchurch.ca) take Trafalgar Road to White Oaks Blvd; turn onto Litchfield Rd. and follow the signs to the end of the street.
