So, Mark Jooris, how was your weekend? It certainly ranks right up there, the Oakville Blades head coach said. Im really proud of the way we're playing right now. All along, weve been very good defensively, but were finding ways to score now. Things are going good. Better now than at any point of the Ontario Junior Hockey League season so far, to be sure. Fridays 4-3 OT win over the West Division-leading Burlington Cougars and Sundays 9-1 pounding of the Aurora Tigers extended the Blades win streak to four games. Oakville has averaged nearly six goals a game during that span. Nine goals in one game will inflate any teams offensive statistics, but scoring four goals or more in four straight games is cer- tainly a good sign for a club that ranks sec- ond-last in the West in goals for. It builds confi- dence, no question, Jooris said. Were moving the puck real quick, the kids are really buying in, and its working. A couple recent additions havent hurt, either. Forward Stefan Thompson, acquired from the Cobourg Cougars last month, has recorded 14 points in 10 games with the Blades. Thompson scored the opening goal in Fridays win over the Cougars at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, then notched a goal and three assists in Sundays rout in Aurora. Hes been real strong. He protects the puck real well and has good vision, said Jooris. He just adds more depth offensively. Meanwhile, Pat Sitko picked up from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Leagues Flin Flon Bombers a couple weeks ago has given the Blades the puck-moving defence- man they needed. Hes just so gifted offensively... with great vision and a lot of skill, Jooris said. Hes so patient and slows the game down. Oakville carried a 20-11-1 mark into last nights (Tuesdays) game at Buffalo, a con- test that began after the Beavers press deadlines. The Blades have a pair of home games scheduled for this weekend, with the Hamilton Red Wings coming to town Friday and the Milton IceHawks visiting Saturday. Both contests are slated for 7:30 p.m. faceoffs at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. NOTES: Mark Corbett had the overtime winner Friday for the Blades, while Kyle Blaney and Josh Ranalli had Oakvilles other markers in regulation time. Daniel Savelli made 28 saves to earn the victory in net... The Blades and Cougars finished their four- game season series with a 2-2 split, both teams winning twice at home... Mark McGowan and Tyler Karius each scored twice versus Aurora. Mark Bennett, Kyle Lysaght, Sitko and Blaney also notched markers, with Savelli once again recording the victory... Oakville played last weekend without the injured Blake Roubus (leg), Nick Scamurra (shoulder) and Brandon Johnston (upper body). Scamurra is expected back in the next few games. Weekends dont get much better than last one for Blades Were moving the puck real quick, the kids are really buying in, and its working. Oakville Blades coach Mark Jooris Loyola girls determined to earn first trip to OFSAA hockey By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF In just two years as a member of the Loyola Hawks,Andrea Ziesmann has experienced both the highand lows of playing in the Halton girls hockey championships game. As a rookie in 2009, Ziesmann set up all four of her teams goals, including the triple overtime winner, as Loyola claimed the Halton girls hockey title. Last spring, the 16-year-old forward and her Hawks teammates were dealt a double dose of heartbreak. After losing the Halton final to T.A. Blakelock in a sudden- death shootout, the Hawks got a second chance to pro- long their season four days later only to lose in over- time to Ancasters Bishop Tonnos in the Golden Horseshoe challenge game. Tonnos then went on to edge Blakelock in overtime to advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSSA) tournament. Its tough to lose in a game like that, said Loyola coach Dave McNamara. And then to come back and lose in overtime, its difficult. And though McNamara said the team will approach this season the same way it has in the past, knowing they came within a goal or two of earning Loyola its first trip to the provincial tournament lit a fire under the Hawks. That gave us a lot more motivation, said Ziesmann, who had three goals and two assists in Loyolas 5-1 win over Notre Dame Friday, improving the team to 3-0 on the season. It would be really cool to be that team that made it to OFSAA. A lot of us have been here three or four years and its something wed like to do before we graduate. McNamara stresses that the team cant get caught SPLITTING THE D: Loyolas Victoria Procyk (center) splits Notre Dames Stephanie Perry (left) and Sara Pezzetta to gain the offensive zone during Fridays Halton girls hockey contest in Burlington. Loyola won the game 5-1 to improve to 3-0 on the season. HERB GARBUTT / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Hawks page 27
