Oakvilles Birmingham family had just made a donation to the foundation for the construction of the new hospital of $3.5 million, $3 million right away, and the other $500,000 to be used to match com- munity donations dollar for dollar. This donation comes just weeks after the founder and president of Mattamy Homes, Peter Gilgan, made a $10 million contribution to the new hospital. Their support has been catalyt- ic, creating tangible change and helping to improve the lives of oth- ers, said Tina Triano, CEO of the foundation, at a recognition cere- mony at the Oakville Tafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) on Thursday. And for more than 20 years Betty and Bruce made sup- porting OTMH one of their charita- ble callings. The latest donation by Betty and the late Bruce Birmingham puts their total contribution to the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital at around $8.1 million. As a result of the latest contribu- tion, the family name will be engraved in stone at the new hospi- tal with the naming of the Birmingham Cancer and Medical Day Clinic. Furthermore, the annual Bank Bed Challenge, which was organ- ized by Bruce, a former president of the Bank of Nova Scotia, in support of the local hospital, will now be named the Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge. The event has raised more than $600,000 to date. The cancer clinic will provide patient assessment, teaching, coun- selling, information, chemotherapy administration, blood transfusions, procedures and clinical trials for oncology patients.
