The 3.5-year-old cat, who gets along with humans and dogs alike, failed to return home after his family let him outside on Aug. 29. Hes a bit of an out- door cat, so weve always let him go out once or twice during the day, said Ted Hayes, Leos owner. Over the years, hes stayed out overnight once or twice, but hes always been very good about coming back. That day he left at about 9:15 a.m. and we just never saw him again. The Hayes family did everything they could to find Leo. They put up posters, walked up and down the street looking for him, searched nearby parks and checked with animal shelters and veterinari- ans, but to no avail. From time to time, they would get a phone call from someone saying they had seen Leo. They would go to that neigh- bourhood and spend hours looking only to discover nothing or that it was the wrong cat. You miss him, said Hayes. I know hes an animal, but its kind of like losing a family mem- ber. As September, October and November passed and winter set in Hayes began to doubt whether he would see Leo again. He had even started talking to his family about possibly getting a new cat when the family received a phone call from a man in Caledon. My wife Anne got this phone call last Thursday, the day before New Years Eve, and it was from a man named Brian Thayer, who said, Ive got your cat Leo, said Hayes. She was obviously very excited about that, but at the same time youre a little bit skeptical because wed received all these other calls that hadnt worked out. Hayes said the skepticism disap- peared when the man described Lost cat found in Caledon barn four months later Leo and said he got Leos name and the Hayes phone number from the tag, which Leo was still wearing around his neck. The following day, Hayes and his daughter drove to Caledon where they met Thayer and were reunited with Leo. It was great, said Hayes. The first thing we did was bring him back and he has since gotten used to the house and the dogs again. I took him to the vet yes- terday afternoon. Were still waiting for the results of a couple of tests, but she said he looks pretty good. He actually gained a little bit of weight while he was away. Thayer said Leo had simply walked into his barn one day and after allowing him to stay a couple of days, Thayer noticed the cat had a col- lar and called his family. This isnt Leos first adventure. Hayes said his son originally found Leo on the street while studying in America and brought Leo home for the family. With everything that has happened, however, Hayes said hes taking steps to see that Leos wandering days are over by making him an indoor cat. That may be a bit challenging, but I think its a good idea, he said. We still have no idea how he got all the way from here to Caledon.
