Oakvilles South Asian Gallery of Art (SAGA) is hosting an exhibit by a prominent Indo-Canadian artist and Burlington resident, who goes by the name of P. Mansaram. The exhibit, titled Mahal, Maharaja and Mansaram: A Solo Exhibit, opened Dec. 27 and will continue at the gallery until Feb. 28. The show features a collection of rare paintings by Mansaram, in which he captures the splendour and magnificence of the maharajas, their palaces and their cities. Maharaja is the Sanskrit word for high king. The cities of Jaipur, Udaipur, Bikaner, Krishengarh and Pushkar are featured in the mixed media paint- ings and collages, which have been created over the period of the last 45 years. The paintings depict the life and customs of the maharajas, their love for art and architecture and their passion for life. The Burlington artist is native to Mount Abu in the Rajasthan State in India. He studied fine arts at the J. J. School of Arts in Mumbai and at the Academy of Fine arts in Amsterdam. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi. The show is curated by Ali Adil Khan. SAGA is located at 1277 Fairmeadow Trail. Hours are Saturdays and Sundays 2-5 p.m. or on weekdays by appointment by calling the curator at 416-702-9355.
