This week at the Richard Bell Memorial Hockey Tournament, the Oakville minor atom AE Rangers played five games in just 52 hours. As a coach, Charko isnt as fond of tourna- ments for another reason. Theres no time to practice, he said. You dont get a chance to fix things you see between games like you usually do. There wasnt a lot for the Rangers coach to repair this week. His team won its first three games and came within 61 seconds of going undefeated in round-robin play before the Barrie Colts rallied for a late goal to earn a 2-2 draw Tuesday. Wednesday, the Rangers got a second chance to finish off the Colts in the tourna- ment championship game, but it was Barrie that jumped out to 3-0 lead on its way to a 4- 1 victory. We played them yesterday and took it to them, but they tied it up on a flukey goal, Charko said. Today, we might have been a little overconfident. Chalk it up as a lesson learned for a team that has learned many of them this season, showing great improvement along the way. The Rangers currently sit in third place in the Tri-County Hockey League standings with a record of 14-6-4. But they showed how far they have progressed by knocking off both of the teams ahead of them in the standings at the Bell tournament, edging second-place Stoney Creek 4-3 and first- place Flamborough 5-2 in their first two games. They followed that up with a 3-1 win over the TNT Tornados before tying Barrie in their final round-robin game. Charko says he has a lot of skilled players on the team. Anyone can step up and be the leader, he said, and thats good because they come in with the a good sense that This could be my game. But Charkos goal has been to have the players use those skills in a team concept. The kids have progressed a lot, Charko said. A lot of times, this is their first year of rep. Theyre used to always being the best player on their team (in house league) and they can do things by themselves. So this year is learning about not doing it as an indi- vidual, but doing it as a team. You have to change the mindset from Ive got room (to skate), to its better to pass off because it puts the puck in a better position. So far it has been paying off. After some early season losses, the Rangers are making strides. Oakville edged Clarington 2-1 in the final after beating the Kingston Ice Wolves 2-1, the Durham West Pengolds 3-1 and the Durham West Black 9-1 in the opening round.
