The new occupancy agreement, signed in early December, grants the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club a licence to use the lands where its buildings and facilities are located on both the east and west side of the river from now to 2061. Under the agreement, the club continues to own and be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of its buildings and equipment. Rents are based on current market value with annual escalation and periodic review clauses. The agreement is non-exclusive, meaning the Town has reserved the right to use the property periodically. Bronte Harbour Yacht Club spokesperson David Smith said the agreement provides cer- tainty for the club and also secures the Towns right to terminate the agreement if it needs the lands for another purpose in the future. Presently, the lands are located in the flood plain and are subject to the Halton Conservation Authoritys control and are only suitable for recreational purposes. Smith said the agreement also recognizes the contribution the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club and the other boating clubs make to the community each year, not only with their learn-to- sail and safe boating courses, but also in the work they do for community charities.
