Halton police have the results of their holi- day RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) Campaign, which once again yield- ed the sad truth that many people are still not getting the message to not drink and drive. The campaign stretched from Dec. 1, to Dec. 31 and ended with 40 people arrested across the region on impaired driving offences. This is an increase over the 32 people arrest- ed during the 2009 holiday RIDE Campaign. This year Halton police stopped 31,905 vehi- cles and conducted 279 roadside breath tests. Police stopped more cars this year, but test- ed fewer people with roadside tests. This year, in Oakville, police stopped 8,406 vehicles and conducted 67 roadside tests. Thats an increase over last year when 5,161 vehicles were stopped and 41 roadside tests were done in Oakville. Oakville had the lowest number of people arrested for impaired driving offences with 11 people arrested in Oakville, 12 in Milton, Georgetown and Acton, and 17 in Burlington. During the 2009 RIDE campaign eight peo- ple were arrested for impaired driving offences in Oakville, 11 in Milton, Georgetown and Acton, and 13 in Burlington. This year police also handed out 90-day driv- ing suspensions to 12 people in Oakville, 12 in Milton, Georgetown and Acton, and 17 in Burlington. Halton police are reminding residents to prevent drinking and driving by choosing a sober designated driver before partying; taking public transit, a taxi or asking a friend to drive you home; or spending the night where the activity was held. Police also remind residents to immediately report impaired drivers to police by calling 911 as impaired driving is a crime in progress.
