After Before 9 W ednesday , January 12, 2011 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m Marai is hoping board will reverse its decision the new board of trustees to revisit the equity and inclusion policy passed by the previous board last November after the October municipal elec- tion, but before the new board had been sworn in. I cant speculate whether they are going to choose to revisit it. We really want to make sure we are following the (provincial) guidelines and we are also looking at the churchs teachings as well, and that we are providing a safe communi- ty for all of our students. Ontario's Ministry of Education told the Beaver school boards have leeway in how they interpret and imple- ment provincial equity and inclusion policy provisions, but that it is not happy with LeMay's comments. I would say that the chair's comments were inappropriate and offensive, said Erin Moroz, director of communica- tions for Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky. We are pleased the chair has apolo- gized for her comments and re- committed to wanting to build an open, respectful environ- ment, she added. We support gay-straight alliances as one option for boards to consider to build a more inclusive, respectful school, but decisions about creating them (policy) are made by local boards and they can choose a different approach, said Moroz. New Oakville Catholic trustee Paul Marai, who is gay, said he was surprised by LeMays comments, but said he is more worried about the idea of ban- ning groups like the gay-straight alliance. I know her to be quite a tol- erant, understanding and accepting individual so I would- nt call for it (resignation as chair) definitely. She's a good chair and I think its an unfortu- nate kind of phrasing maybe. Concerning the (banning) issue, Im very strongly against this ban and I want to bring it up (at the board) at the earliest opportunity to reverse it, said Marai, noting of the more than 100 e-mails he and the board have received on the issue over 95 per cent are asking me to help overturn the ban. It was the past board that put this in place after the election. They didn't bring up the issue in the election whatsoever, but in one of their last meetings on the way out they decided, Hey, let's add this to our agenda. I, quite frankly, find that unacceptable. It's counter-productive to be ban- ning these things. We should be spending our time on more important priorities like tech- nology in the classroom, student success and a responsible budget, so I hope to reverse this as soon as possible so we can get on with the important issues. The Catholic board's website discuss- es its viewpoint and board resources available to students. Social or cultural discrimination is incompatible with Catholic moral prin- ciples and addressing those issues any- where in society is an important value that is taught in Halton Catholic schools. The Catholic Church recog- nizes the dignity of all persons and nei- ther defines nor catalogues them according to their sexual orientation. There are a number of supports within the board available to ensure all of our students feel valued, respected, safe and included. These include access to chaplaincy leaders, guidance coun- sellors, teachers, social workers and child and youth counsellors. DAVID RITCHIE / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER OXYCONTIN STOLEN: Police at the scene of a Sunday afternoon robbery of Shoppers Drug Mart at Hopedale Mall. Shoppers robbed Halton police are looking for a red- haired man who allegedly stole OxyContin from the Shoppers Drug Mart at Hopedale Mall at 1515 Rebecca St. Sunday afternoon. Police said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. when a lone man went to the pharmacy area of the store and passed a note to the employee on duty demanding the painkiller OxyContin. The note also indicated the man had a gun. The employee handed over an undisclosed amount of OxyContin to the suspect who then fled the store. No one was hurt during the rob- bery and no weapon was actually seen. The man is described as white, in his mid-40s, six feet tall, with a thin build, reddish hair and a pale com- plexion. Police are continuing to investigate this incident and anyone with informa- tion related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747 ext. 2218 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
