Fun in the snow By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The power plant may be gone, but the residents association Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) said they still have work to do and goals to accomplish. Around 60 C4CA members braved Tuesday nights snowy weath- er to attend a meeting at John Knox Christian School where the group outlined the challenges they intend to tackle next. Tuesdays meeting began with a few words of praise from Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn who talked about Oakvilles remarkable victory over TransCanadas 900-megawatt gas- fired power plant, which had been planned for the Ford-owned lands of 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. C4CA rallied thousands of resi- dents against the power plant, last year, out of fear the power plants proximity to residential areas would harm local air quality and harm nearby residents in the event of an industrial accident. The Province formally an- nounced its decision to cancel the proposed TransCanada power plant in Oakville on Oct. 7. More often than not when a project reaches the stage this project was at, it goes ahead whether its a C4CAs work not over See C4CA page 3 By Megan Ogilvie TORONTO STAR The Halton Catholic District School Board will take a second look at its controversial policy banning gay-straight student clubs at its schools. The policy committee voted 6-2 Tuesday to recommend the board rescind its operating policy on equi- ty and inclusive education. That policy, approved by the for- mer board last November and which bans gay-straight student clubs, has sparked outrage from human rights groups, inspired a Facebook protest petition and caused a flurry on the Internet. Newly elected Halton Hills trustee John Mark Rowe made the motion that the board replace the policy with one issued by the Ontario Education Services Corp. Rowe called the board's four-page equity policy "poorly thought out" and "unbalanced." "It looked totally deficient and couldn't give good direction to the staff," Rowe said after the meeting. "I felt that it does need to be looked at again." The ban on student gay-straight alliances dominated discussion at the meeting. Catholic board will re-examine gay-straight club ban See New page 8
