Catholic school competitions will be held over the next two weeks to determine who will compete at the Oakville championships later this month at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School. Public, private and home-schooled Oakville children who have not attended a local Catholic school competition are also invited to compete at the Oakville championships, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22. Winners of their respective age and gender divisions at the Oakville championships will move on to next months district championships, which will also be held at Loyola. All contestants on the local level will be recognized with a certificate for their participation. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written personal consent. The Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners receiving recognition prizes and progressing through local, district and state/provincial competitions. International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus headquarters, based on scores from the provincial-level competitions. Since its beginning in 1972, more than 2.5 million youths have participated in the contest. Free throw competition open to all local youth GOLDEN AGAIN: The Oakville pee- wee AA Rangers won the Paul Coffey Christmas Tournament title recently, their sec- ond tournament gold of the hockey season. The Oakville peewee AA Rangers recently won their second tournament of the hockey season, claiming the Paul Coffey Christmas Tournament title. Oakville went undefeated in round- robin play, then blanked the London Jr. Knights Gold 2-0 in the semifinals before grounding the Misssisauga Jets 2- 1 in the championship game. The gold-medal contest was decided in a four-round shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and a five-minute overtime period. The Jets lead their division in the Greater Toronto Hockey League, while the Jr. Knights Gold are in first place in the Minor Hockey Alliance. The Rangers next goal is to repeat as Ontario Minor Hockey Association AA champions. They won as minor peewees last year. Members of the team are Lucas Ricci, Braden Leedham, Kyle Kolwich, Ryan Horner, Steve Jang, Craig McCormick, Ben Prentice, Andrew Wilkinson, Matt Di Lella, Liam Coderre, Cale Cutcliffe, Daniel Moll, Josh Rees, Brian McGinnis, Bryant Mckeon, Ben Hamburg and Cole Sarafinchan. Steve Horner is the head coach and is assisted by Ed Martin and Warren Sarafinchan. Frank Moll and Blake Cutcliffe are the team trainers.
