The annual Valentines for Veterans campaign sees the Knights of Columbus encourage children in all Halton schools willing to participate to craft valentines, which are then shipped all over Canada to Canadian veterans of the Second World War, Korean War, peacekeeping missions and Afghanistan. Last year, the Knights of Columbus suc- ceeded in collecting more than 3,000 valentines from Halton schools, which were then mailed to Veterans Affairs Canada where they were forwarded to Canadas veterans. While the valentines are meant to be a gesture of appreciation to the veterans who receive them, Knights of Columbus mem- ber Stephen Germann said he also hopes making these valentines will have an impact on Oakvilles youth. The Knights of Columbus section Im in is very interested in patriotism and this is part of our To be a Patriot Program where basically we are trying to instill and spread patriotism around the land, said Germann. This is about love of country, respect for lawful authority, and certainly respect for our armed forces and everyone else who has made the country is good as it is. Germann said the Valentines for Veterans campaign started years ago after members of the Knights of Columbus read an Ann Landers column in which she called on her readers in Canada and the United States to send their veterans valen- tines. Germann said Purolator will ship these valentines for free. The Knights of Columbus is the worlds largest Catholic fraternal service organiza- tion.
