Trafalgar Township Historical Society "Documenting, celebrating and preserving the agricultural heritage of North Oakville" Fall Newsletter 2009 Board Report Member at Large- vacant- Please email Michelle if you are interested in filling this vacant position. michelle@tths.ca or 905-257-9080 The waterproofing of the school basement is complete! Hard to imagine that this is finally done. The contractor left the premises August 26th. Council has approved our renovation request based on the heritage aspects only. We still need to complete our mechanical drawings and those are being done right now. The Palermo Hall flag pole will be installed behind the schoolhouse. The Region of Halton will pay for the installation and the Town will own the pole. This flag pole is at least 98 years old and stood in front of the old Palermo Hall. We have picked up 20 chairs from the old QE Park school and we will use them in the basement once it is renovated. We have received the boards from the old Snider's school that have the circle painted on them with the school number. Unfortunately the middle board is missing so we hope to have an artist paint on an extra board we got to complete the middle of the circle. We will then frame them and hang them in the Palermo schoolhouse. The Alchemy group of companies that is based in Mississauga but moving to Oakville in the new year has approached us about donating a sign. We are presently working out the details of the sign and preparing to write an application to the town for a sign permit- that of course will require council approval. We will keep you posted! Trafalgar History Updates Fire at Kaitting House- There was a fire set at the Kaitting House on Dundas just west of Sixth Line. There are only 3 exterior walls left standing. The interior is completely gone. The developer had requested permission in November to have this building designated to have it put on blocks and moved closer to Dundas to protect it from vandals. It is unfortunate that the Town could not have moved more quickly on this because I think it may have made all the difference. Mattamy was going to restore this home and donate it to the community. This is a huge loss for our Trafalgar heritage. Hagar Hotel We have been informed by the Town of Oakville that the owner of this property can apply for demolition at any time. This is one of the most significant buildings in Palermo and the only building left that is connected to the Hagar family. This is also a great loss to heritage reservation. 1
