At first I set a modest goal of $250, whichhas been surpassed, so I have been setting the bar a little higher at $500. Any donationsare welcomed and appreciated. On Monday, the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada (CCAC) announced find-ings from the Weighing Quality of Life in Cancer National Survey showing that analarming 82 per cent of Canadians have been touched closely by cancer and have hada close friend or family member battle cancer, or have done so themselves.I am one of those Canadians. More than 25 years ago, throat cancer claimed myfather; I lost a brother-in-law to lung cancer a few years ago, and nearly two years agoI had a brush with melanoma (all clear now). Currently, two women at The OakvilleBeaver are dealing with their own battles against breast cancer. So it really wasn't difficult to volunteer for the Jail-N-Bail.Unfortunately, this year it seems I may be a rare jailbird. Volunteer jailbirds are stillurgently needed. According to Lisa Dale, fundraising coordinator for the CanadianCancer Society, Halton Unit, felons can turn themselves in or nominate a co-worker,family member, friend, neighbour or spouse to participate. The Halton Regional Police have teamed up with the Society to help arrest allwanted felons. On event day, jailbirds will be brought before a judge, who will review each jailbirdscharges. 'Sentencing' will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at centre court.
