(Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources) will be the keynote speaker at the June 15 annual general meeting of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights.The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights is pleased to announce that Leslie Adams, general manager of P.O.W.E.R. - Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources, will be the keynote speaker at our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 15, said its chair Mervyn Russell.The meeting will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. in a committee room at Oakville Town Hall located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. Leslie Adams is passionate about sustainability, the planet, species (peo-ple, too), and ecosystems. She has been involved with the United Nations Commission for Sustainable Development since the 1992 Earth Summit. She has been working in areas related to biodiversity for more than 20 years and has been directly involved with the Convention on Biological Diversity for six years at the national level, said Russell.P.O.W.E.R. is a Halton Hills-based organization that stopped the Acton Quarry from being turned into a gar-bage dump by winning an amendment to the Niagara Escarpment Act.Also, P.O.W.E.R. established Wastewise to encourage conservation and reuse. Since 2000, P.O.W.E.R. has engaged 16,000 student participants in various educational programs related to biodiversity.I strive to help people take actions in their personal and professional lives in order to live more lightly on the Earth and to find our way back to recog-nition that we are a part of, not apart from, nature, said Adams, who moved from Montreal to Georgetown, Ontario in 1996 and has a background in psy-chology and land use planning. Adams will address the topic of mak-ing biodiversity a mainstream issue. Her address will be at 7:30 p.m. with the business portion of the meeting to fol-low at 8:15 p.m.In the latter half of the meeting, OCCPEHR will review its annual activi-ties and elect the organizations officers for the coming year.
