OUR READERS WR h warn Many dog owners not aware of law Mr Hurst Town Clerk Acton Municipal Offices Dear Sir Today called your offices to enquire whether the Canine Control Officer had made any routine patrols of the subdivision lately The area has had so many dogs running loose this week that once again 1 feel compelled to see exactly what can be done about it Fust I must mention that have a dog of my own so I am not a doghater by any means But a dog UNCONTROLLED constitutes a menace to children a hazard to traffic and a complete disaster to gardeners 1 am sure that half the dog owners in Acton are not aware of the law concerning dogs running loose These misguided people feel that they are being cruel by keeping their pets in their own back yards But the potential danger to children and the damage to other people property doesnt seem to bother them one bit Most dog owners know that awful feeling when a dog slips out when a door is opened but the responsible owner makes every effort to retrieve it both for the dog sake and everybody else Would it not be possible to issue a pamphlet outlining the rules concerning owning a dog with every dog tag listing the penalties for infractions And a quarterly reminder in the Free Press might do some good too Surely it would not be a strain on the town budget and it would put a lot of mothers minds at rest especially during the summer months Also as an avid gardener would welcome the relief from having to watch shrubs and plants killed by the pets of these thoughtless people Please give my letter some thoughtit may be a small point but a very necessary one and one that IS covered by law Yours truly Mrs Beryl M Bennett Elmore Drive Acton The Editor Free Press Drag strip dump shock visitor To the Editor Dear Sir Three or four years ago I spent several months holiday in Acton and its surrounding areas and was sad to have to I return to England and not make my future home in Acton a delightful little town of if friendly folk Since that time I have received each week your Acton Free Press which v continues to keep me in touch with the activities of your town The first shock was that recently you were considering giving permission for a drag strip to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside during weekends and as badly as is that the latest unthinkable action is to bring lo this lovely little area the ghastly idea of a rubbish dump not only for the town of Acton but for a clearance of several other towns rubbish Why choose such a position when there must be miles and miles of surrounding y land far away from nearby houses and agriculture area Have you considered the danger of rats and how very quickly they multiply numbers and the danger of spreading diseases Have you considered the nearby neighbors and the annoyance to them when winds are in the direction of their homes We live in a thickly populated town with rows and rows of terraced houses but our council placed our rubbish dump far removed from them and if we can do it surely you with so many miles of land unoccupied by nearby homes can find a more suitable spot for an eye sore such as this dump will be If women were on the council I m sure they would see the great wrong to allow this very disturbing idea to go through and would not give it even a second thought Women seem to have far greater common sense than the majority of men and 1 hope they have the opportunity to express their opinions in this matter Yours faithfully Mrs A Mills I Rd E 17 Dramatic breakin rescue Church St Acton Ont Aprils To the Editor I would prefer advising you that the Pattersons have just returned from a two week holiday in Sunny Florida but as you may already be aware certain things transpired at home in our absence which might be of more interest some your readers How about this Imagine your consternation upon hearing that your house had been broken into while you were on holidays especially after you had asked the Police to keep an eye on things But then the neighbors came and told us that the Polite wen around regularly AND THAT THE POLICE THEMSELVES HAD BROKLN IN The whole thing was quite innocent or course It seems that when getting ready to go and after you check the doors windows and all the other usual things you should also make sure that the tat has been put out and has stayed out Wc had nude arrangements with one neighbor to the cat and she noticed that the food wa not being touJied Another neighbor spotted a cat inside the house after one week swinging from the curtains rather frantically She informed the Police and quite a crowd gathered outside the house to ponder the fate of the stranded cat Various means of gaining entrance were investigated and after due discussions by ill concerned a window was smashed and the cat dramatically saved A certain cat lover volunteered some cat food another warmed some milk the window restored the crowd returned to their normal duties knowing that they had saved one under nourished feline and done a good deed Our sincere thanks to the participants in this little escapade especially Esther Taylor the out interested friends and neighbors and the two major culprits in the caper Jessie Coles and Cons Roy Wood Incidentally we had a wonderful holiday in Day lorn Florida and tried to bring back sonic warm weather with us brought it as far as Chatham but lost it there in a snow storm However I have a hat it may show up here soon like all misplaced things do Hugh Patterson Jiggy Joggers tour Guelph sugar bush The Acton Free Press Wednesday April 8 M
