The Acton Free Press Wednesday April fl By Wendy Thomson I hardly live in our house any more Three times a day when I go down to the barn to water Velvet never realized just how much water a horse can hold I get entranced all over again and stay to watch the twins The day after they were born I piled some straw a corner of the stall sat down and had a really good look at the two The colt promptly came over and began staring back couldnt help but laugh With his ears pricked up his dark eyes shining and his four inch chin whiskers jutting out he looked like a little billy goat To my delight he all but climbed up into my lap and began nuuhng all around my face gumming gently on my chin and nose This got to be a regular session and forward to Shortly after though he found that he could not only jump but kick as well and that wasnt wanted to try it out on somebody As soon as hed finished being friendly hed turn his little round rump to me and start shifting his feet into kicking position much the same way a cat gets ready to pounce To his great chagrin he was small enough that could hold his rear end down with one hand Every day the imp in him grows and you can sec it in his eyes Once while was watching he tore in circles around his ever patient mother then stopped short and bit her cither on her nose or her tail end then dashed away flicking his heels up her And yesterday when I gave Velvet a bucket of water the coll put his foot in it and stirred it up a bit watching a few oals floatingaround the top with great in ten In ess Every time they slowed down hed give them another swish The filly is as different from her brother as night is from day or buckskin is from chestnut While he tears around madly with his head held high she stands very shyly head down peeking up through long dark eyelashes While he looks like a goal she looks so much like the little Mexican burro that David once had his eye on that called her by Davids year old mispronunciation Sparrow And Sparrow docs suit her for at days old she still a frail wee thing She hasnt put on weight the way the colt has but shes getting monger and steadier on her feet At first Sparrow by in the straw looking barely alive rousing only long enough to feed then collapsing again Velvet didnt exactly ignore her but was so taken with the colt that she overlooked her filly much of the time Remembering Velvets excitement over the whiskey we gave to Sparrow to give her a boost I took a couple of ounces down to the barn and sprinkled Sparrow generously with Velvets eyes lit up and she gave Sparrow a good going over wunnerful Now Sparrow can stand for a good length of time Her favourite spot is directly under Velvet where suppose its nice and warm Shes so tiny that she can walk all around under there first popping out under Velvets chin to take a mouthful from the oat bucket then looking out from her mothers tail to see what the colt is doing She is the picture of timidity as she stands there blinking with her knobby little knees together shifting from foot lo foot looking for all world like a little girl who has lo go Ihc bathroom And today she jumped Just like a toddling youngster who discovering wonder of being keeps hollering Watch Mom then leaps an inch off the floor and comes down with a boric jarred thud she tensed with a look of great concentration jumped two inches and came down with a jolt that nude me wince Then quite happy she turned and tottered back under Velvet During the first four days after the twins were born we had about people come to sec them There was a fair bit of praise floating around at that time and I really should give credit where credits due After thumbing through a slack of horse books in a futile attempt to find information on the care and feeding of twins and mother turned to my old for advice Thank you Benjamin For Sunday Biunch tried something a little different instead of the usual toast or pancakes Its an old Scotch or English
