SILVERWOOD The Acton Free Press Wednesday April 15 OUR REAPERS WR Protests charge for twp dump Esquesing Township Councillors Dear Sin By this tune you have no doubt received many callsletters protesting the charges to be levied against residents dumping garbage in the township dump Who was the bright character who dreamed up this bylaw Business must have been pretty boring at that meeting to come up with this one In the first place if the dump is not being serviced properly due to lack of money though heaven knows the taxes are plenty high enough now why has the null rate not been raised so that every township ratepayer will pay his equitable share Secondly this stupid by law excuses a car owner from paying while his neighbor who just happens to own a has to shell out his every time he has a bag of garbage to be disposed of Thirdly is the township prepared to pay for and provide receipts every time a small truck or dump truck backs into the area How much is the collector going to be paid and how much will the extra booking cost councillors And tell me sirs if you please will the dump be open on Saturdays or can we dump now and pay later We could always leave our names attached to the garbage bags so we could be billed Maybe if this collection proves satisfactory the residents could have one free dumping day per month Nuts Mr Curne wc happen to own a half tn pickup truck no car On the average we dump maybe once or twice a month three to five bags of garbage Why should we be expected to pay a fee of for dumping perhaps less garbage than a car owner throws out Get your head out of the clouds Mr Curne Surely there are more important by laws to enforce in this township than this one People arc getting fed up with this petty kind of politicking and they re not going to meekly stand in line waiting to pay their fees for the privilege of using Esquesing dump No They re going to be tossing these same bags out on the sidcroads and along the highways Mr George Kerr that good and tireless enemy of pollution will surely be sad to hear of the once lovely countryside being desecrated with cluttered piles of rotten smelly garbage and rusty tin cans Don t let 1970 go down in history as the year Mr Curne and associates helped pollute the township Come on Let go forward not backward Keep the dump the place for dumping by repealing the by law and keep our township clean Mrs Sheila 0 Rourke R Acton Calling all cooks in Acton To the Editor of the Free Press Dear Sir This letter will be slightly different from other letters to the editor as it is not intended to condemn any person for work undone or to commend any person for work well done To misquote the oration of Marc Anthony at the funeral of Caesar I come not to bury Caesar nor to praise him It is my hope to enlist the help of some of the very fine cooks in Acton in a very worthy cause Each year the Ladies Auxiliary of Hal ton Centennial Manor sponsors a Spring Tea and Bazaar This year it is being held on Wednesday May 13 at p It has been their custom to request assistance from various interested groups in the area Since the Manor is a county home each year one town in the county has been asked to assume the responsibility of running the bake table with the wife of the mayor in each case acting as convener This year they decided to request the assistance of the ladies of Acton and I agreed to act as convener Letters have been sent out this week to all the ladies groups in the town However I know there arc many excellent cooks in Acton who do not belong to any organized group and who would be very willing to contribute articles of baking These are the people hope to reach with this letter With the other council members wives and one or two other interested ladies who have voluneered their help I am certain we will have enough workers 1 am equally confident that we will receive generous contributions of baking from the women of Acton There will be cars and drivers available to pick up baking and Memorial Hall St Alban will be open on the morning of Wednesday May 13 until 12 noon to receive donations The ladies listed below will accepted calls and sec that contributions arc picked up and delivered OtkM Knox Ave Mr E TyltrJr G McKtntta 163 Jtffray Ave Jeffrey P Mark 163Tdey Coati Young Si Mn J Greer Poplar St Pratt 49 How St 138 Elizabeth St Churchill Mn The Editor The Acton Free Press Dear Sir At a time when topics such as pollution destruction of nature areas the growing pressure of ever expanding population capture newspaper headlines almost daily it gives great satisfaction to be able to report an event of great consequence in the fight to conserve a livable environment A few days ago a court order was issued in the form of an injunction against further work to create a dragstrip out of lot Con Esquesing township This is a decisive step in the right direction and i good news for the thousands of residents of this area who wish to see the North Halton region maintained as a viable community Not only will the immediate neighbors of the proposed dragstrip breathe easier I those people who in good faith poured much effort and money into the construction of fine residences on the Fifth and Sixth Lines the injunction will also be welcome news to all those who have not yet given up all hope against pollution of the air against intolerable traffic congestion against deafening engine roar and all the other side effects which a venture such as a dragstrip would bring It can hardly be expected though that the battle is won The organizers of the will no doubt fight back and attempt to go through with their scheme despite the popular objection Legal litigation may be long and costly and even though much money has already been contributed by dedicated people more is needed Mr Ellis L Taylor of Georgetown has taken on the task at least for the time being to act as treasurer and coordinate all financial contribution to further this cause Yours truly Charles Hildebrandt Joins executive Ont Jr Farmers Brun of Acton was elected to the Executive Committee of the Junior Farmers Association of Ontario at their annual
