Miss Acton Fair contest climaxes Friday show The traditional crown and scarlet robes of Miss Acton Fair changed hands tor the eighth time Friday night at the climax of the opening night show of the fall fair Vivacious 17yearold Anita whose delightful ability at mime had Just broken the first tie In the contests history couldnt believe It when her name was announced and she shed a few tears of happiness She reigned over the fair Saturday and wins a host of prises well as the title First runnerup was Rosemary Bird Acton she wins Don Tlnnirngs Beckers Milk trophy Second runnerup was blond Dolores Jordan 17 of Acton who received the Imperial trophy The other two charming finalist were Margaret Slaver of Acton and Karen Atkinson 17 of Acton Entrants In this years contest were almost all from Acton and the immediate area with a few from Erin township entrants The lovely young ledlea In evening gowns and gloves with corsages numbered As well aa the five finalists the entrants were Nancy Abram Christine Anderson Gall Douglas Path Dunne Irene Ellen Diane Frank Nancy Gordon Darlene Holmes Marie Holmes Debbie Spear Nancy Spear Judy Thlbodeau Debbie Watson Shelly and Bonnie Wood bearded John athletic director at Sheridan college Miss Kitchener- Waterloo Leslie White and radio station advertising director Holloway For the Orat time the Judges were faced with a tie after we interviews parade and im promptu speeches They decided on a new ploy to determine which of the top two would be given the title They called back the five finalists with a challenge mime changing a tire The audience was still laughing when the final decision was made and an nounced to a suddenly hushed and tense crowd which burst Into cheers The Friday night show began wllh Acton Citizens band limbo dance by Peggy Jackson con cluding with a flaming bar During the evening the crowd toured the commercial displays In the hall the refreshment booths and saw the Judges decisions In the classes weather which dawned Saturday morning after almost a week of wet chilly days almost assured the success of Actons annual Fall Fair Sure enough when the treasurer counted the days receipts after a day of handling large crowds of there was another record- taking gate Fair president Bill and his directors were delighted All In all It was a pretty good Fair said Mr especially considering the fact there were two other shows on close by Estimated crowd for the two days of activity ranged as high aa 10000 although gate receipts from the Friday night per formance were down Poor weather Friday was blamed for the smaller gate although many people went away convinced the show was the best ever seen at the annual arena performance It was estimated over people saw the varletyprogram and crowning of Anita Thlbodeau as Miss Acton Fair Anita a beauty from R claimed the title in a contest with girls which ended In a mime for the five finalists to break a tie The fastpaced variety show which sandwiched the Miss Acton Fair contest was lively Mistress of Ceremonies kept the large audience en tertained and the acts ranged from comics to dancing to illusions by a magician Saturdays parade was another feature of the Fair which will be long remembered Three bands led the long procession of floats and decorated cars end vehicles which wended Its way FAIR PRESIDENT Bill Nelles welcomed a the Fair was well on its way The Saturday program was so varied with a midway baby show fiddlers contest musical ride livestock and horse shows all going on simultaneously Throngs crowded around the poultry and glimpsed arena displays The community centre was crowded all afternoon making entry and exit a real chore at times Fair directors were especially delighted with the success of the old tune fiddlers contest which drew eight entries from several points National fiddle champion Graham Townsend was also impressed and felt directors should go ahead with It another year as on attraction The baby show was an out standing success with Infants competing for ribbons from as for away as London and as close as Acton Mason Knit donated prizes and Charlie was M C for the judging Audience was estimated at over for the three hour event which one visitor familiar with fairs classed as the best baby show ever seen Hardworking secretary Mrs W said although livestock entries were away down from last year because of competing shows the quality of the entries which exhibited was ve high The horse show was classed as fair Horses which were en tered In the competition from as far away as Kingston did not appear because of wet weather which held them over at Kingston The poultry show was very good with many entries and hall exhibits were a little better than last year Jumping horses were from last year but were y classed as fair The pony show was another success but entries of swine and sheep were way down from previous years Directors were more than pleased with the parade and had words of praise for the musical ride by Almar Stables of nearby Palermo All the riders were trained by Alan Cutis of Palermo as a hobby They ask no fee for their performance and will also be appearing at fairs In Milton and Erin Saturday s dance attendance was down slightly but there was still a very crowd enjoying dancing to the Food booths did a roaring trade and some sold out of edibles before the day was over The horse show on the old race track was very capably run by Jesse McEnery and his com mittee At the cattle rings Nino Braida kept the various classes parading in front
