Acton Wedn September CUo Mill Rogliuitfon Number The clergy Apeak cut By Rev A B BttdariJnlWorffltti Church BEYOND THE NEW MORALrTY The term New Morality la for many people simply a convenient tor loose morals As ouch It appears to be merely a different name tor an ancient thing called immorality And with a shrug of the shoulder the Issue is discarded and Ignored Irresponsible and unChiisUan For the Bible tells us that we must test the spirits to see whether they be of We may not merely condemn or praise lightly what we see In and around us But before we say anything about the New Morality we like to In on the morality advocated by the socalled Kelller Mackay report on rellgous education In the public schools of Ontario This report makes a great deal of moral development as aim of education In the public schools It calls thla character building of students one of the high duties of public education The present program of education In the public school system alms among others at Christian Indoctrination claims the report In view of the fact that our society Is made up of people with various religious leanings other than specifically Christian the present program of Christian indoctrination must be In favor of a program of moral development and Information In the Judgment of this report In principle I agree with the criticism that Christian Indoctrination In a public school system forced by law upon those who are of a different rellgous stance is discriminatory and wrong But I would also maintain that the recommended substitute program of moral development and rellgous in formation Is Just as biased and discriminatory as the present one In fact It Is worse because It hides under a cloak of supposed neutrality Who is going to determine and define this moral development The report recognizes this difficulty also Si saying that character building defies ear But In the very next sentence we are told that AH readers may agree that desirable qualities of character encompass a high degree of moral development and an of those ethical Ideals which are generally commended by society If we then ask what exactly this moral development Is we read that It 1 equated with the ability to reason morally We are told that In the proceaa of moral reasoning certain values or principles emerge and socially desirable behaviour patterns are a natural consequence of a successful of moral development But do we need any moral standards besides this ability to reason morally Yes says the report and these standards are the values of Justice Because Justice which being a defended at every time and In every la an absolute which enjoys the unique characteristic of being capable unique of being situation More simply then the report contention Is that if people are educated to be reasonable which should be possible since they are all rational beings then they will develop morally In the right way This sounds pretty good and there Is some truth In It also But If we may for a minute call this a New Morality as distinct from the old specific Christian Morality then I think we must go beyond this New Morality to the spirit which promotes this kind of morality and moral development I do not presume to judge the authors of thla report let that be clear this report I believe la we don t need Gods revelation and the contents of the Bible in moral development all we need Is mans reason and the consensus of society With a big word that Is plainly the religion of Humanism and Rationalism And although I am human and rational I will not buy that kind of religion Basically I believe we are all religious beings and my religion Is Christianity and not Humanism For moral standards I do not trust my reason nor the consensus of society but God revelation as It informs the Christian community If you belong to that community or sympathise with it I challenge you to test the spirit of this report whether it Is of God and then to act ac cording to your conviction THE CHURCH OF ST THE MARTYR ANGLICAN Comer Willow Si and St Albsna Drive Rev J Dawson BA BTh SUNDAY SI PI 1970 mot Sunihy Holj of Church School lor CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH Minister Rev P
