By Wendy For the past three weeks there has been no spraying swatting swinging rough n tumble or cats allowed in the boys bedroom Visitors going down the hall stop and look twice at the sign on the door Butterfly Nursery Do Not Spray It all began three weeks ago when son Jim found a thing on the a beautiful delicately green chrysalis half ringed with precise right gold dots On thumbing through our books on insects we found it would be a Monarch Butterfly in two weeks To make sure that the great event couldnt pass us unnoticed the chrysalis was hung by a Next morning SedfSheSw ft mhiM mi m it them for a few days could all keep an eye on It People taken in to see It In variably thought It was a pull switch to turn off the light and many commented on how much It looked like a piece of costume Jewellery Three caterpillars Also In the book were pictures of the Monarch caterpillars on days figuring it would take that long far a caterpillar to turn Into a chrysalis but next morning there they were two shining pale green beads with an empty caterpillar skin up above each Two things fascinated me one that yellow green and white striped three milkweed plants so year old and a half Inches long and about David promptly rushed out and around as my little finger came home carrying weed complete with caterpillars- three of them One disappeared within the hour and the other two were stowed In a jar on Davids dresser Much to everyones concern they dldn t seem inclined to stay put Although the Jar was quite tall those creepies from here and there quite a few times and they seemed quite unhappy to be reJarred The next day when I finally got around to making theyd disappeared completely That night as David put his toys away he found one on the bunkbed ladder and one under a paper bag on the floor- both with their tails fastened could change overnight into something so very different no more than an inch in length and twice as big around as it was before Secondly shrivelling more compactly upwards until It coated the threads that held the chrysalis hung by with a shiny solid black covering so hard that later when the butterflies were gone I couldnt crack it with my thumbnail Mother hens Two weeks passed and Jims chrysalis suddenly turned very dark and emerged two days later Talk about mother hens We were all there fussing around born win talis suggestions First we hung it securely We cut the piece out of to the to dry in the slight the bag and popped it back in breeze and It dripped drip- In and put the caterpillar on the ladder in the comer where it t get knocked around dry butterfly Then it tried to climb the thread but couldnt get a good toehold so we shifted it to the curtain and it travelled up and across the curtain rod Finally because I didnt par ticularly want It learning to fly In thehousc we put it outside on the All In all It sat around with many admirers for a day before it flew away Davids first chrysalis hatched last Sunday morning and was gone by noon and his second on the ladder has just darkened We should be waving it off by Friday Correction In between writing time and typing time Number Three Butterfly came walking out of the bedroom and was sent on his way They should be flying south soon Beautiful willow I remember years ago one summer while I was over at the Toronto Islands a flock of migrating stopped there and all on a huge willow tree It was simply beautiful this gently fluttering tree of deep gold and black Right now whenever I go outside the sight of just ONE Monarch Butterfly provides me with an entirely different kind of JIM THOMSON admires his Joy as I find that Im quite apt to Monarch butterfly which view each with a proprietory air emerged from a chrysalis In his
