per formance last Tuesday Classes from A HJS assembled In the Auditorium They were asked In advance to remain silent while In the gymnasium in order to grasp the total effect of their message concerning Remembrance Day There was no light save for a candle lit at the head of the room Three screens stretched across the walls the two at the ends with still shots the centre one showing moving pictures of the war The war dead of Acton were stated Taking turns the Lord Elgin students expressed dif ferent views of the war all in relationship to the pictures on the screens Touching Perhaps the most touching scene of the slides was that of pictures drawn by children In war dominated countries These sketches constantly showed violence bombs and harm At the completion of the assembly the students filed silently from the auditorium Most classes were given the following class period to discuss Remembrance Day and its meaning to them Surprise shower Thursday was a busy day at the school Tuesday November 10th a few students from a Burlington High School held an assembly here to commemorate Remembrance Day Rather than the traditional services they showed slides and films of the horrors of war They read poetry and played records on the topic of war During the film I was in terested but the reason we nave Remembrance Day never really After it was over I began to think what Is the meaning of Remembrance Day anyway Why do students get the day off when the people who fought the war arc working Just names To children November 11 is more or less just another holiday How can we concieve the Idea of death or freedom or cause when we ve always had freedom and never felt death Weve never seen a friend or loved one die In battle never received a telegram telling us of someones death To us the names on the cenotaph are Just that names Just like the names we read in history books or even the bible Watching the films was Just like watching movies and knowing it happened but not really being able to connect it to our lives Each year we hove a Remembrance Day Service and each year I leave It behind forgotten until the next year I cant tell you what the meaning of Remembrance Day Is because I really dont know It Is Just another day in year another day off school Snowmobile club ready The Acton Snowmobile Club has been well underway for the upcoming season of snowmobiling since early summer when the officers of the club were elected Ron Holloway was unanimously chosen president with Wynn treasurer A corn roast was held at the home of Mr and Mr3 George Venn to allow everyone to get acquainted and meet new members A few other meetings were held to finalize plans for the float in the Fall Fair parade and this past Thursday a meeting to introduce new members to the constitution and discuss further winter activities among which to Include cookouts safaris and other adventurous outings for the whole family The club is a nan profit organization whose objective is to combine fun and safety for the in the Acton area Members have already enjoyed a very successful and safe reason of Hespeler bests bantams bantams downed Acton Firefighters here Saturday afternoon In a Tri County league game The visitors led at the end of the first period and after two frames The third period was scoreless Laurence Haightling Van Strepon and Chittock were the marksmen Terry Holmes scored the Acton goal on a pass from Billy War what It g for Lest we forget In the darkness a lonely candle flickered A drum beat and between Its rolls the names of Actons war dead were heard Screens became ablaze with color depleting war death and suffering A voice spoke of war and the at to war to some tis an honor to give ones life for his country to others Its a job a duty to be fulfilled to others Its a monster robbing wives of their husbands stealing childrens fathers The rhythm of a rock melody crashed through the loud speakers with the words war what Is It good for Absolutely nothing Meanwhile before us flashed pictures of Hitler and Churchill with his and armies marching and bodies lying motionless A voice spoke of Pearl Harbor and Its aftermath the Atom Bomb and there before our eyes hung that reddish mushroom over a devastated land From Vietnam we saw what some children draw school not toys and pets but helicopters and soldiers guns and death WAR Im proud to serve Its my duty war what is It good for Absolutely nothing so ran the theme of Acton High Schools Remembrance Day Services for Foster child develops pride happiness For the past four years Day took on a went For otters stopped class It made some depressed different outlook this year at time to think of and sad as they realized the hurt Acton High Students from Lord II rtlu Elgin in Burlington put on a for tnelr MCT angry as they realized the sen- presentation of a unique nature Some of the students of selcssness of war As one entered the gym the were in the latter group And what did it make me It names of those Acton men killed for on Tuesday afternoon wo had left me waiting left me with an in war echoed In the silence our usual Remembrance Day unfinished feeling And Narrotors read poetry servicebut it was different terwards it made me guilty and presented diverse views on Instead of the traditional Last because I could not definitely war while scenes of war flashed Post eulogy etc we had a run define the emotions I felt I do on two movie screens and two commentary complete with know however that this program slide screens dims and slides on war It was did not Inspire in me the humility presented as a contemporary which I believe on This assembly created well of view so to be relevant to those Remembrance Day I also am controversial opinions The for whom war is just an illusion a sure that It made me ashamed to following ore views expressed by nightmare discussed but not belong to such an animal race as students at Acton High experienced We saw films of mini Vietnamese fighting and pictures by Vietnamese children we heard poems by Donovan and NoVlCeS DOW Dylan By using those things Cant explain I tan t explain what I saw t real Remembrance Day service but it got across to what war was and they wanted remember those who had yt awaited anxiously As the town has helped ln its support of in the post by means of chocolate bar sales and other such schemes we would like to share his letter of progress and photo with you Dear Parents appreciate your continued interest in extending help to Arturo and his family Four years of support certainly medication Assistance is recommended for on Indefinite period of time died It should have helped you to remember those who fought in the war but the feeling of sympathy was lacking for those who had something to rem cm It did bring up emotions It brought up a point war Is here now be aware of it now Present wars should be brought to the attention of those who don have anything to remember I saw pictures flashing on the screen People were just reading material about war Feeling of nothing 1 just come out with a feeling of nothing and went on to my next class I felt like walking away will Just not saying anything to anybody that the lord students wanted us to think about war ln the world today whether right or wrong Whether you liked the service or not it did make you think to make Remembrance Day meaningful Acton A B novices suffered and defeats at the hands of Georgetown and Milton ln County league action last week is presently in the fifth grade He has remained diligent and
