Mail goes through on rural routes Although this district did not suffer as severely as other parts of the province during the recent cold and blustery weather there was sufficient severity to keep most people inside and some in the rural districts were unable to leave homes because of blocked roads Rural mall carriers In the Acton area were unable to complete their routes on Tuesday and Friday of last week but other than that mall went through In surprisingly regular manner Someone has penned a few words of appreciation to the rural mall carriers which sounds appropriate at this time while the wind is still whistling and the frost Is still dropping the thermometer below the zero mark In the cold and blustery weather When the frost Is on the rail Would you like to face a blizzard With hair a ton of mail In the biting blizzard weather When the snow comes to your knees Would you like to fish for pennies While your feet and fingers freeze When outdoors the wind Is whistling And the air Is full of snow Would you love to have a Jitney And the blamed thing would not go 1 love the good old fireside Sipping coffee from a pall But I have to buck the snowdrifts Cause the formers want their mail The Acton Press Wednesdoy February 197 District Page Ospringe Storm county honors Guides mumps in news SNOW BANKS tower over cars bury fences although in some open spots where snow piled 1067 Dear May This will be my last letter before I see you and am I ever getting excited Its been a busy month getting ready to go away but I think the most important event has been the sale of the store Gladys has been looking after the post office this last year or so while Norm carried on with the store Im sure they must be sad to be giving it up but I have no doubt theyll find lots to do to keep busy The new owners are John and Irene Turner who have lived In the village before so they will have many friends wishing them luck Mall order canoe Ive had quite a time buying a canoe Back In the winter I was looking through a mall order catalogue and saw this at a fairly reasonable price Ive always wanted one because as EVEN SPRING CREEKS valves for fresh water have been iced over by the frigid temperatures which have gripped this area the past weeks Measuring devices used for hydrological surveys are rendered almost useless by the just past Acton Meadows Eden Mills golf course shows Staff Photo all we were allowed were row boats and as this looked like the opportune moment ordered one Well I got a notice saying It would bo delivered to station three miles away so I phoned and It seemed that to change the order for delivery would require a letter which the girl assured me shed write I thanked her saying Well sure I dont get two canoes She thought that quite a good Joke The next thing that happened was that one night when I went In to pick up my mail John Turner handed me two paddles In plastic bags if you please There was quite a crowd in the store so this created quite a lot of excitement and I could almost see the children lining up for rides Unfortunately one of the paddles was split and so had to be returned Twin canoes About a week later I had a call from saying they had a bill of lading but no canoe At Cancel school due to roads Annual meeting of church held By Mrs A Benton Local school children were safely delivered to their homes on Tuesday afternoon but offered to pick the thing up for me as he has a rack for the top of the car Finally the canoe arrived and hurried home to tell him On the way I stopped for the mall and received a notice that a canoe would be delivered to Eden Mills the next week You may be sure I cancelled that one first thing next morning And a day or so later Norm went over to Rockwood to fetch the one from there He actually got it on top of the car this time delivered in a carton and was strapping down the last corner when he noticed the carton was damaged He investigated and found a broken rib So of course he didnt accept it Bag Jinx Disappointing all right but Ill try again when I get home In June I cant help feeling that delivering such outdoor things as canoes and paddles In cartons and plastic bags somehow
