Patterson and Don Harris Staff Photo By Stanley dairy fanners met In the Agricultural office Milton on Mondays Jan IB and from to pm to discuss their business of dairying George dairy specialist for this area of the province assisted with the meeting Considerable time was spent on the discussion of milk quotas a most complicated subject Farmers must concern themselves with group one quota federal eligibility quota and market sharing quota Each farmer must asses tils own quota situation and decide whether or not he needs additional of any of the three quotas If the farmer Is selling fluid milk that does not fall under quota he receives approximately per cwt for it Trucking and other charges must come off this amount with Hog marketing up per cent By H J Stanley In 1970 the number of hogs marketed from Halton County Increased by over per cent to from the previous year This compares to Peel County where the hogs marketed was a 36 per cent decrease from the previous year Canadian hog marketings at close to eight and three quarter million was the highest since 194V Ontario marketed almost three million of these with over a per cent Increase In marketings from the previous year Average price The average price received for all hogs sold In Canada with an Index of In was In Toronto the average price was down some per lbs from 1969 The quality of hogs Improved considerably In Halton County In per cent scoring and over compared to per cent the previous year The only counties with a higher score than this were Peel per cent and Lincoln per cent costs of production some three or four times this amount the farmer certainly Is losing money For the fluid sales covered under group one quota the base price Is per cwt For the portion of milk the farmer sells up to 11 per cent of fluid sales the farmer receives 370 per cwt for 35 per cent milk Market sharing quota then enters the at per cwt If a Is shipping more than 125 per cent of his fluid sales he would then qualify for the federal eligibility quota which would mean 469 per for a limited amount of milk Quotas A considerable sum of money must be spent for these quotas Group one quotas are currently selling at per lb Federal eligibility quotas are obtained by purchasing dairy cows and over then quota at a dispersal sale Market sharing quotas are obtained by private negotiation between dairymen with no established price per for these The feeding of the dairy cow was another main source of discussion Some 30 feed samples from the participants were analyzed at the University of Guelph The rations fed to Individual cows on these farms were then discussed In detail In many cases high producing cows not receiving sufficient nutrients to maintain this production In moat cases the low producing cows were being overfed This grain should be taken from the poor producers and given to those that require It In order to determine the needs of any cow the farmer must know how much milk that cow Is producing and feed her ac cordingly This means that all dairy producers should be on a testing program either or Shuffle county committees A small shuffle In chairs was carried out by Halton County Council during the regular January meeting last week Miltons Deputy Reeve Percy Barr had been named chairman of the Child Welfare committee but the group meets on Thursday evenings and he Is unable to attend Garnet McKenzle of Acton was elevated to the post of Child Welfare Chairman and Burlington Deputy Reeve David Coons was added to the committee to replace Mr Mr move to Industrial Development bumps Georgetown Reeve Rick Morrow out of his seat on that committee But It was understood Mr Morrow was being appointed to that committee by his town council By HCook The annual mooting of the Halton 4H Jan 28 1971 RR Dear Sir I read your editorial Pornography on the Shelves Opinions differ greatly on the merits or demerits of pornography differ on this irnoortant subject and Its effects upon us lowly In the for Instance a study group commissioned by the president found pornography harmless but their recommendations were dropped due to pressure from dogooder groups In my opinion we must uphold the democratic principle respect the rights of all the people not Just a few To do this those who object to socalled pornography should be considered Just as those who are not offended by pornography should also have consideration I feel that unsolicited literature as pic tures of a nature should not be permitted In the mails but that a person who wishes to send for such material should be allowed to so do Such books magazines etc should be displayed or sold In stores or parts of stores not accessible to children Movies are already graded for their content but I believe the advertisements for all movies should conform to standards that dont offend the public Win A Johnson A totalof five building permits were Issued In Esqueslng township during January Total estimated
