even more of a thrill to make one that Is not made by everyone All too often the only grand slams that are bid are In no trump where you have every ace king queen and Jack and could take tricks If there were enough cards Here Is a grand slam from last week action at the Acton Bridge Club North dealt with North South vulnerable NORTH S A 10 J fl I A WEST SOUTH S K J llA J i Cq 10 Cfl The bidding NORTH FAST I Paw T H Pa SOUTH 1 S WEST Pill Pan All Opening lead Seven of spades Semibalanced North has a semibalanced hand and fourteen points It should be opened one heart South has a problem He could make a jump shift which would be gome forcing but there could be a misfit It is often better to proceed slowly The one spade response is forcing North rebids one no trump showing the balanced nature of the hand and a minimum opening bid South must act now He cannot Jump shift for he has no other suit so he uses Blackwood to find out how many aces North has After discovering two aces and one king South tries seven spades Here we are Declarer is disappointed to find North with the king of diamonds Instead of the king of hearts A grand slam should not be bid on a finesse but here we are and the heart finesse must work or we are down As well as the heart finesse there is one diamond to be disposed of The only place It can go Is on a long heart In dummy This will require five entries In dummy so declarer must carefully The heart finesse must be tried at trick two The opening lead Is won in dummy and the heart queen is led East covers with the king and declarer wins with the ace A second heart Is led to the jack and a third heart Is ruffed Enter dummy Dummy is entered with the spade ace and a fourth heart is ruffed Now dummy has the thirteenth heart and declarer is home free Dummy is entered with the club ace and a diamond discarded on the good heart Declarer can claim the balance Two declarers failed to make thirteen tricks when they took out trump before touching hearts This left them one entry short in dummy Last weeks winners at the Acton Bridge Club were first Kate and Jack Coats second Gwen and Pat third Gloria and Bill Coats AllCanadian awards for Halton Press Wednesday February 10 NEEDS AND MOTIVES OF By Father V J Morgan Pastor St Josephs Parish Some people have a strange Idea of what lift really is What is necessary to retain if What its purpose How should we make use of It Is it temporal or eternal Does society or fellow man play a part in our life or are e alone and does religion an important part in life Is religion a real need in our lives What is the relationship of religion to the secular world Is the principle purpose of the Christian religion mere to build a better world In which man can live during his mortal life here on earth Or Is It to lead men to supernatural life which consists in the possession of God throughout eternity This question is fundamental to religion and the answer that man gives to It will his attitude towards life and all that it contains It is in man religion where he is taught faith hope and love for God and his neigh and the greatest of these is charity all done for the love of God and because God demands it Christian revelation teaches unequivocally that each man Is called to life which consists In the possession of God through knowledge and The anguish troubles and sorrows in life spoken of so often by agnostic and atheistic philosophers comes not only from the sufferings of life but also because they must be endured without hope Their plan to build great world on earth is born of the despairing thought that this short mortal life is all that any man will ever have The result after a is what Suicide Vatican Council emphasized the point II it must work earnestly for a better world for the cure of the grievous Ills that befall mankind today for the building of a more Just and brotherly in the world However the Christian a real truly religious man approaches this task of building a better world from a far different viewpoint than that of the agnostic or atheist He works to remake human society according to God plan to reestablish alt things In Christ The mission of the church and each Christian is to work for the accomplishment of this Divine to bring every nation and Individual sou Into Gods eternal kingdom This can be accomplished in striving to make a better world by developing the gift of supernatural life given to man by God As Christians we cannot make the temporal welfare of men the final goal of our work for them Christ worked His miracles of healing in order that men might believe and believing have life In His Name All efforts and work for the temporal welfare of mankind must have the ultimate purpose of bringing man to God In Whom they will find eternal life This does not mean that we will work with less dedication for the relief of the miseries of mankind and for the establish of justice and charity on earth but it will mean that we do It with a supernatural motive If we have this supernatural motive In trying to alleviate the sufferings of mankind and to make a better world for him in which to live Almighty God will surely help us and will bring home to the need of prayer as well as action since God help Is promised to those who ask for it Let our motive In all our good work of chnrity be Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam For the Greater
