DO The Acton Free Press Wednesday February By Reverend Harry J Dawson Church the Martyr Union talk between the Anglican and United Churches received some guidelines from the leaders of both churches at Niagara Falls The United Church of Canada and the Anglican Church of Canada recently held their official national meetings at the same time and place In Niagara Falls The national bodies of both churches met in Joint council over the question of union of both churches Mr Turner from the United Church in town and myself were fortunate In attending the meetings of that day We were with history in the making We attended sessions together and heard the new Moderator if the United Church Moore and the new Primate of the Anglican Church Archbishop Scott state some principles of guidelines directed to both churches These guidelines I feel can be applied here in Acton Moore spoke from his background as cochairman of the Joint Union Committee lis concern reflected the necessity of both churches to demonstrate the kind of faith and trust in each other that comes from Christian commitment to Jesus Christ We must be willing to commit ourselves In trust to each other and grow out of the suspicion and mistrust that has tended to characterize thepast Wcmustcomeofagelnllghtofour new understanding and knowledge of each other and offer ourselves to each other in faith and trust with both strengths and weaknesses Archbishop Scott spoke from the standpoint of Integrity It was Is If the two men collaborated to balanco each other reflecting perhaps something that now embodiment of the churches united might accomplish for each other The pleaded that we not sacrifice our own Integrity by compromise That we needed to stand up for our convictions but surely in a way that does not or compromise the Integrity of our brother He spoke of it In terms of a joint communion service to which people from both churches were Invited He said that If the participation In receiving communion would tend to offend or compromise the conviction of the person then he hoped he so doing he hoped that no Judgments would be cast either on the person or by the person on the rest To my mind It was a sound principle of Christian trust In each other freedom and responsible decision making Both leaders reflected the kind of faith In people that we are all striving for and committed to as Christians To my mind union talk must proceed on these kinds of principles to have faith and trust In each other that will allow us the kind of freedom so necessary to preserve our Individual and corporate integrity In such a way that we may be able to grow with each other in open relationships that avoid the suspicion and Intrigue that inevitably results from lack of trust and acceptance OUR READERS WRITE Expressway our gift An Open Letter to The Citizens of Acton The The Acton Free Press Acton Ontario Were you asked The Ontario Municipal Board today on a split decision decided to approve the though some of us are looking the gift horse in the mouth truly E M Remarks out of context 200 Elmore Drive Acton Ontario February The Editor The Acton Free Press Acton Ontario Dear Sir 1 would like to put into proper perspec tive some remarks attributed to me from a planning board meeting on February which believe were taken out of context and misconstrued to paint the board in a very bad light Specifically Sir I refer to report and later your editorial which stated that I and the planning board were against sidewalks and paved roads in our new subdivisions On the night in question the board was attempting to find a solution to a problem that a proposed builder has in a newly proposed subdivision This gentleman was concerned by the rising costs to him of a lot in this new development which he would have to translate ultimately a higher down payment and thus make sales of these new homes more difficult Since the hydro commission rightly insisted on underground wiring and would not relent on that item he felt that the cost of the lot was becoming prohibitive for the types of community he had envisaged It was then in this light that planning board was trying to solve his lot cost problem to bring In this new project to our community This town has a tight agreement for the one reason that the leaders of this community believe that any new area to the town should be properly and completely laid out from the beginning at no expense to the alliens already established here It was felt that if any Item were to be dropped temporarily it could be the sidewalk requirement as this Is easily Installed later on a special improvements tax and thus a cost only to those who are receiving the benefits and not to the community at large Let me emphasize however that I fee strongly about sidewalks being placed as quickly as possible In certain critical areas for example the south side of Elizabeth from Jeffrey to Main I feel nevertheless that sidewalks front lawn where I live are not only unnecessary but would detract from the appearance as well as be a large costly my tax bill It is estimated that a sidewalk would cost per foot or for an average lot to lay down I really do not desire this item on my tax however if the majority of taxpayers in Glenlea and this new subdivision really want sidewalks they can by petition through a special improvements tax have them installed forthwith The paved roads Item which was mentioned merely as an aside concerned the building of foot wide paved strips in the subdivision at considerable expense and it was my own opinion that the taxpayers would be more satisfied with Improving the present roads than paying for these expensive dragstrips In conclusion Sir I would hope that in future any remarks made at these meetings not be taken out of context to paint a picture which was never Intended Also I would be wry interested if the Chamber of Commerce could take a poll of present subdivision residents on these matters to aid those in office who must plan lor any Improvements and new projects 15 Sideroad meeting Is on March Property owners along 15 In queuing and will have their to discuss possible and Improvements to the road The issue became a controversial In January when petitions for and plans for Improving the road were to county council Some property owners feci the road Is dangerous and want It fixed to Insure safety while others suspect the road will be used a major route for trucks and tarn Both sides will bo notified or the meeting with the County Committee March at p at Iho county buildings Service before profit Public service should be put before profit Member of Parliament advocates Ho strongly supported this view In Parliament a week ago This Is what I have been advocating since I got Into parliament said Whiting The CNR should provide passenger service to people and communities They could make a profit on it if they would tailor the service to the needs They are not doing It Should bearing If the CNR tampers with service in a community the community should be informed of Ihe changes and if they want to they should be allowed to have a hearing before the board of transport commissioners This is right up my alley I the CNR has got tracks and Is not using them for community service They should sit down with the province and work out a plan for a feasibility study for GO trains We are spending millions of dollars on super highways and all the money Is coming out of the pockets of the taxpayers Will take part Whiting was not In the House the day the matter was being debated He said however that he would be taking part In the debate on the CNR Air Canada financing bill when It comes up In the House for third reading In debate on the CNR Air Canada financing bill MPs from all parts said the Crown owned railway should provide transportation first then worry about profits Provides expenses The bill which was sent to committee after second reading would provide CNR up to million for expenses such as equipment property branch lines communications and hotels Retain service at oclock After the morning service at Trinity United church Sunday a vote was taken on a possible change in the time of church After discussion the majority voted to retain the present hour of 10 ACTON DELICATESSEN GOURMET SPECIALITIES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ASSORTED COLD CUTS IMPORTED
