B8 The Acton Free Press Wednesday March ets Play Bridge A letter from Eden Mills Well last week it finally happened We have had snow storms ice storms rain and fog in the past before but the Acton Bridge Club carried on However last weeks freezing rain really did it Only two hardy souls from Acton showed up and no one from out of town even tried to get here For the first time In eight years The Acton Bridge Club did not hold a regularly scheduled game Quiz this week Since I have not been playing any rubber bridge and since I missed my weekly duplicate bridge I Just dont have a hand to write about so I thought Id try a quiz instead This quiz is very basic and covers several points that I stress in my bridge classes Your partner opens the bidding one spade and your right hand opponent passes What do you respond with each of the following hands 1 S 3 HA 2 D A J 8 3 HQ 2 CQ3 3 SJ9 3HK5 7 2C K53 SQ108632H VoidD A95 C 7 Answers given Answers 1 One no trump In spite of your six card suit headed by the ace and the king you cannot bid two hearts Any response at the two level shows a minimum of ten points Your partner may drive to game with only sixteen points and will probably not make It is more important to show the value of your hand rather than the best suit in your hand Two diamonds You want to support spades you will at your next opportunity Your bid cannot be passed Unfortunately a simple raise shows only 6 to points and a jump raise shows to points Since hold points must make a temporizing bid Two spades Here the choice is between two spades and one no trump Since your hand is worth only one positive response make it the one that will do your side the most good You have found a trump suit between the two hands and its up to you to tell your partner that you can support his spades 4 Four spades This is the one bid that really confuses new bridge players If a simple raise shows to points now can a double jump raise show this poor hand Highly distributional hands cannot be shown scientifically All know is that partner has a spade suit Township declines to pay bill Erin Township Council received a letter from an area re sident enclosing a The letter explained blowing on the township roads was necessary in order to reach a lane the resident had been hired to dear No Clerk Elmer was in structed to write a letter of app reciation for the service but advising that council declined to set a precedent the bill since the resident was not called in by the road department Superintendent Ed commented that the road crew would make special effort at any tune to clear a road in tunes of If residents would just contact the township office or himself and an opening bid If your partner has a good hand he will probably make four spades If your partner has Just an average opening bid the opponents can probably make four hearts Dont give them a chance to find out Jump to four spades Your partner will make it more often than not ANDREW MURRAY MOTORS Mountainvicw Road GEORGETOWN Eden Mills Ont May 1968 Dear May Thank you for your letter How quickly they come these days Spring here once more Although It hasnt been a bad winter I find that It averages out at about three really bad driving daysa year Though of course I do get away for a while at the worst time So perhaps thats not a really fair estimate I have just stowed the snow shovel and away having left them on the porch until Id cleaned out the shed optimistically I put those snowshoes ready year and each year seem to find easy excuses for not getting out with Gladys as we always plan in the fall One Saturday though I did go for a walk up the river with her and then into h6r house for a cup of tea Irene Turner Joined us and you may be sure we had a good old chit Buds swell Everything is beginning to look MMMMMWMMMMMMMWAMMMMMMMA green again One of the things Ive particularly noticed here la the gradual swelling of the buds especially in those two large maples down at the road I didnt realize before how early they start You can notice a change by about the third week In January a good time of the year to see such encouraging signs Ive finally thrown away all my plants But I had quite on interesting time with them Last year I actually had one for me Thinking of how they grow in Florida I had set it out during the previous summer in the sunniest spot I could find So I tried It again including a couple Id received tor Christmas When I brought them in last fall it looked as If Id have about a dozen blooms nary a one I think it may have been because we had so little sun in November Anyway I spent the whole winter trying to find a window they liked They got tall and lanky and frankly Im glad to sec the last of them Lovely here It was so lovely around here morning soft and rainy There was a little rabbit under one of the apple trees hardly large enough leaves to offer much protection It fixed me with an unblinking eye and when I moved to fetch the camera it also moved away is more the word Later In die day when the rain had stopped I saw a couple of them cropping the grass Just outside dads window They are there quite often and seldom move unless we deliberately walk In that direction Coming home from church last Sunday I stopped In to have a chat with Susie and Wllk Wilson Their garden was looking shipshape And they will be having the usual excellent show of roses next month I am going to a baby shower next Tuesday Another of the customs here is that when anyone marries or has a baby they make a collection through the village My friends know I like to be Included so If Im away one or other will put up a dollar for me Do hope things go well with you dear Love Val Classifieds sell hire Response to classified ad vertisements in
