The Acton Free Press Wednesday March 17 The Apeak cut WASTES POLLUTION By Rev A Walter Chnrchfll Community Church Years ago when I was a boy living in my parental home I was greatly Impressed by a slogan carved around the wooden butter dish which was habitually on the dining table The Inscription ran thus Waste not want not That proverb has left an indelible impression on my mind and has stayed with me and Influenced my life throughout the intervening years Waste in any form bothers me even though there is undoub tedly a great deal of waste to be found In the natural order of things Waste in nature of course follows a cyclical pattern and la not in the final analysis waste at all That which is wasted here simply serves as a means of replenishment for nature unfolding drama of evolution Waste as practised by man Is of an altogether different matter In this case it is sheer waste resulting In the breaking of recycling and replenishment and this Is the basic cause of pollution Rather than re employing the byproducts of his labours and scientific achievements toward reproductive ends man has the habit of discarding them of throwing them away Thus it la that we have widespread pollution of our and rlver3 even of our seas of our air of our land of our ecology and life in general It should ever lastingly be our aim to put to use all of the byproducts of our labours and scientific achievements By way of illustration as to what I have In mind In this regard let me cite a number of factual examples The Berkstrom Paper Company of the state of Wisconsin operates entirely on using reclaimed paper products and saves the state some tons of annually This a corres ponding saving of forest trees which In turn saves precipitation runoff retains some of nature beauty and adds immeasurably to man enjoyment of the outofdoors Or to bring the matter nearer home Some ago the Furniture Company located in Hanover Ontario imported a huge lumber reclamation machine from Germany The odds and ends from the cutting of the lumber used by this wellknown furniture concern are fed Into this machine which grinds them up Into small pieces which in turn are treated with a gluelike compound rolled Into lumber like form and used In the manufacture of more furniture This byproduct Is in many ways preferable to the natural lumber because it is not given to warping This same company has followed the practice of planting two trees for every tree which It cuts down In Its forest reserves It has gone even further than this it has Imported trees from other lands and experimented on the growing of a wide variety of such trees here In Canada This represents to me not only conservation and reclamation on a truly grand scale but a highly beneficial and rewarding one to the general populace and ecological situation This is the road which mankind in a universal way should be travelling and this is the ultimate answer to the problem of pollution Every byproduct can be used to man benefit and blessing It Is his place to discover through the use of his scientific know how Just the way in which these by products can be used to benefit man most The waste which we bury as garbage within It the elements of the best kind of fertilizer available Our Japanese friends arc processing such garbage and paving highways with the finished product Crushed glass secured from returnable bottles other sources has been used sue in our own province for the same purpose It has been said that our meat packing companies use every part of a pig except the squeal for some product or other Of course every housewife knows that too much fat is ground up and put Into sausage casing and this fat when friend out of the sausage is wasted The company most assuredly could find some way In which this same fat might be used in a beneficial manner And right there we have the solution to this entire problem of waste and pollution to use every by product in a helpful meaningful and beneficial way With the knowledge he has today man can If he uses it wisely find the answer to this vexing problem Indeed he had better do so or there will be no tomorrow for him the world of nature The powers he has are God given He should therefore work together with God in their employment Silverwood Alaska trip relived at Institute meeting By Mrs Scott Mr and Mrs Burt opened their home on Friday evening
