Rock and Broom mostly corn By Bob MscArthar Ontario rinks have not fared so well In the national playdowna this year The seniors the mixed and the Briar went to western clubs The top teams have been mostly young curlers this year They seem to have the vim and vigor to stand the long haul to the top And they used to think that curling was an old man game Not any more A short while ago a letter from the club made a point that husbands wives or sweethearts of members were welcome at any time to enjoy the facilities of the club And of course others who have no connection with the club will be extended the courtesy of the club privileges if they care to drop in for a visit and to view the activities on the ice The latch string is out to visitors This coming Saturday is the Northern Stag It is an Invitational affair run by Bob Armstrong The prizes will be worth curling for and the curling is generally of a high calibre Spectators are welcome too Just about a month left for the curlers before the switch is pulled and the ice goes out So if you have not had enough curling to satisfy you out there and get your hand In Spares can always be used as someone on the teams Is mire to haw had a last minute holdup and cant appear for their team Notice in checking the score sheets that a number of teams have hod to forfeit games because of nonappearance of players If you can t be there when your team is scheduled to play please let your skip know In plenty of time to find a substitute It makes for a better fellowship and game if all are present Recently two members from the Curling Association were at the club to view the ice conditions They were Mr Metcalfe and Mr Bonus After discussing some of the problems of crooked ice they made a number of suggestions for curing the faults These will be taken up as soon as possible Witla Hewitt Mae Dumarsh June Girth and Lois Mackenzie visited the Milton club last Friday They came away with the top prize Second prize was also taken by an Acton rink composed of Kae Hansen lAicille Cooksley Vol Drinkwalterand Gwen Tyler Not bad going for the Acton Club representatives This was an invitational The I A bonspiel Is scheduled for April recreation Reeve Tom Hill told members of Council Monday night A letter from Georgetown Council asking that Esqueslng three representatives to sit on a committee with three Georgetown representatives to discuss the recreation budget and a visit from repre sentatives of the Glen Williams Minor Softball Association prompted discussion among members of council The Georgetown letter pointed out the town charges no nonresl dent fees for use of its tional facilities Ten per cent of participants subsidized by Georgetown recreation committee are residents of the letter went on Made donations year for the first time council set aside in its budget which was eventually divided up among Georgetown Milton and Acton to help pay for minor hockey players from the township using town facilities The money was distributed ac cording to the number of town ship boys each of the towns had playing Representing the Glen Williams group Donald asked council to consider making grants to recreational tions In the township not governed by a recreation committee on the basis of number of persons registered In the past Mr Lawson explained council has generously supported minor softball but has based grants upon the number of championships won by each organization A sum of was paid for each championship Although Glen Williams teams won a total of seven champion ships Mr Lawson pointed out the organization which has only been operating a few years won no championships Titleshardcomeby Championships are hard come by he told council They may need even more assistance he said Mr Lawson also reminded council other teams in the Halton league Hornby Drumquin and Kilbride are subsidized by and Burlington recreation commissions Last year Glen Williams operating expenses were while money raised amounted to only Approximately youngsters from atom to midget age played softball Council thanked Mr and promised to discuss the matter further at budget time Later In the meeting Councillors Wilfrid Leslie Dick Howitt and Len Coxe were appointed to sit on the committee with three representatives of Georgetown council Reminding his colleagues Acton and Milton also nave youngsters from the town ship using facilities Councillor Coxe cautioned Remember whatever we do we have to do three times It start most exten slocks of slacks bo found he It continues ng like none been offered before
