OUR READERS WRITE Wolves not dogs chasing deer Acton March mi To of Lands and Forests Dear Sirs You said in the paper last week does were chasing deer over the cliffs at Duff Quarry I think you will find it Is wolves chasing them instead of dogs My son and nephew found two wolves at our creek with a deer down in the water One wolf had it by the throat and one had it by the tail They yelled and hollered and scared the wolves oft and they chased the deer up the path ahead of them till It almost came to the buildings then it headed down towards the reforestation They had taken the deers tall off and she was bleeding quite a bit This was only a couple of weeks ago The boys saw the wolves after deer a year ago too so this Isnt the first time They came and got my brotherinlaw and then went around to the other line with the car and got a look at the wolves They couldnt get close enough to shoot them but they were sure they were wolves So I dont think you should blame it all on Mrs MacLeod Do not object to road improvements R 2 Ontario March Dear Sir Again I find myself pointing out that people on the Slderoad In and who signed a petition and attended a hearing to determine the future of the at no time objected to it being Improved or made safe The ob jections were to widening the said to 100 ft in Esqueslnglng ft in I made this point in a letter to the Editor of this paper at Council at Nassagaweya Council and at the County Hearing I wish people would get the facts straight before blowing off steam Concerned Citizen in last weeks Free Press stated that some of those at the hearing should have been at the accident scene Several people were I was there just after Certainly there was fault in the ac cident but whether It was the fault of one or both drivers or the road I am not qualified to soy I have lived on the IS Slderoad for 16 years I drive from the Line to Georgetown dally and at all hours and In my opinion the hill in question and other bad spots are safer at night than in the daylight hours unless of course the oncoming vehicle has its lights on bright or denies you the right of way I feel deeply for those Injured and I wish them a speedy recovery but I still maintain that if this road is widened to or ft It will become a drag strip on a truck route and the result will be many more accidents William A Johnson Missed four days pay because of snow Acton March I Just want to quote an excerpt from the Acton Free Press dated Wednesday March Township declines to pay bill Road Superintendent Ed Borden commented that the road crew would make a special effort at any time to clear a road in times of necessity if residents would Just contact the township office or himself The fact is after the storm on Saturday March 7 1971 there was blowing snow till Monday noon March The road clearing crew passed my house at 3 pm Sunday for the last time As I dont get paid for any day I dont work and as I work in Toronto depend on each working days pay so 1 can cover my payments of taxes mortgage etc I am not a buy guy as I get up at 7 In the morning during the wintertime to make It to work at 30 I called the road superintendent on March at 11 pm because I was eager to definitely go to work on the next day asked him if he would come during the night to clear the road because I could not go west or east or in any direction to reach any high way at all Mr Barden stated I had the road crewi out the whole day and they are tired I asked him if he had a replacement shift crew and he said No but he promised me to come Tuesday morning around or a little bit after I waited and waited I waited all day The crew came at pm in the evening on Tuesday March That means a salary loss for me which I have to deduct from my tax bill if I want to live up to mans dignity Because of the bad road conditions I could not make It to work four times this year even when I tried so hard It meant a loss for me and where Erin township stated that a special effort at any time will be made to clear a road in times of necessity if residents would Just contact the township office or the superintendent As I have called and as it was a necessity I would like the township of Erin to set this straight and not put honey In township residents mouths when it means salting the road Teachers and insurance Dear Sir On behalf of the County Elementary Teachers we wish to clearly express our feelings concerning the white paper that Includes teachers as contributors to the unemployment Insurance fund It Includes teachers but excludes small businessmen or the selfemployed worker who for one reason or another may need this Insurance more than teachers do Let us suppose that teachers will have eventual need of such Insurance Under the resent terms of reference In the Insurance Act there are few if any benefits to teachers The most important provision In the Act is for retaining the unemployed but the Act does not provide for sending teachers back to University for retraining It Is highly doubtful If many teachers will be dismissed except for reasons of Incompetence because the annual retirement rate will take care of the presently decreasing pupil enrolment Those who have Just graduated from colleges must hold a job first before they are eligible for benefits It can be dearly seen that no benefits are forth coming to teachers In short this Is not Insurance but an unemployment tax so lets call it what It is Furthermore did you know that you our employers the taxpayers must match payments dollar for dollar This means that a conceivable one quarter million dollars could be collected from the Halton County taxpayers as the employers contribution This money will not benefit the students but go to the federal government to support an insurance scheme that teachers neither need nor want In Ontario approximately million dollars will be collected as part of education taxes and be sent to Ottawa It Is estimated that of this million dollars only million will return to Ontario in benefits to the unemployed As teachers and taxpayers we are opposed to this unemployment legislation on three counts 1 It is not insurance because it offers no benefits to us It squeezes money out of the taxpayer for unemployment under the pretense that it is for education 3 Most Important it a devious method of collecting money to patch up an antiquated system that should be completely scrapped and rebuilt to make It more useful and equitable We as teachers are not against helping those who are unemployed through a legitimate means of taxation but we do oppose paying for insurance that has no benefits We offer this Information for both our benefit and that of an already burdened public Sincerely Elementary Teachers Association Mrs Vera Macdonald President Elementary Teachers Association Confederation St Glen Williams Can forces peace keeping praised from Pag B3 real and if the difficulties could be restrained to the island itself It would not have the world significance which It now has Turkey only miles away has assured the Turkish Cyprtot minority on the island of its support and limited Turkish forces are present on the island Any Involvement of Turkey in the affairs of Cyprus would bring an automatic reaction from Greece This involvement of two NATO countries spells major problems for world peace and could very well be the tinder box to ignite a major conflict Thus the presence of the on Cyprus has implications for the whole middle east and indeed perhaps for the whole world My scribbled observations at the time nave not changed told us nothing new and skillfully evaded some penetrating questions He was he bid his farewells on the porch of the palace but he left me with a concern that this powerful man in which church and state are one was not able to give more to get unity Acton Free Pre Wednesday Ma 31 1971 Supports Walter Mulkewtch West NDP Provincial Candidate and president of the Halton West New Democratic Party Association Is one of a number of Provincial New Democratic Parry Candidates to sign a letter urging New Democrats in J Ontario to vote for Ed Broadbent at the federal convention In Ottawa In April The vote from Wentworth delegates is likely to be split among Ed Broadbent David Lewis and John Harney Mr Mulkewlch believes that Ed Broadbent has a contemporary kind of approach that Is necessary to make the federal party the same kind of vital political force that the provincial New Democratic Party is in Ontario INTERDENOMINATIONAL Holy Week Services sponsored by ACTON CLERGY ASSOCIATION DEER ARE BEING chased over cliffs at Dufferin Quarries near Campbell ville by dogs or wolves and this carcass is proof that it has been happening through the winter season The top photo taken by Jack Carpenter as he filmed for the CBC at the quarries caught a deer at the top of the cliff arrow OPP re School holiday accidents cited A total of four motor vehicle accidents were Investigated by the officers stationed at the Acton Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police during the reporting week of March to March This was the week the school children were on holiday and despite repeated warnings to motorists that the children were away from school and would be out In full force on the roads two of the accidents investigated Involved children The two children were not badly hurt but it could have been much worse So parents when you let the little ones out to play have an extra word with them regarding road safety And Mr Motorist drive extra carefully when you know school is out Charges laid Total damage was estimated at in the other two accidents that were investigated and two charges were laid against the erring drivers A total of three general oc currences
