and from tin world of sport By Denis Gibbons Watching Acton Legion bantams in action in Saturdays tournament I couldnt help but be reminded of that old that has plagued the Acton minor hockey scene for years Minor hockey in Acton is supervised by two separate organizations Acton Minor Hockey Association sponsors the towns five 0 M A entries while all house league hockey is under the jurisdiction of the Acton Legion Minor Hockey Association Both organizations are doing a reasonably good Job in their own right but theres an obvious lack of understanding between the two on some Important points 0 teams were established to give players with superior ability a more competitive brand of hockey than they can get in house leagues The purpose of house leagues is to provide recreation for those who either dont have the ability to play 0 hockey or for some reason or other prefer not to Theyre not Intended as a place for 0 HA calibre players to dominate play and fatten up their points totals at the expense of other innocent players with less ability Anyone who saw Saturdays tournament could see that the Legion bantam team had at least six players who have the ability to play 0 M HA hockey Of the 16 players on the team are second year bantams Pour of them have had previous O HA hockey in a younger age bracket The two teams they beat for the trophy were strictly house league calibre and made up of a mixture of first and second year bantams The paradox of the situation is that Actons 0 M HA bantam entry suffered through a year in which they won only one league game out of and were eliminated in straight games in the playoffs Only one of that teams 13 players had previously played 0 M H A bantam hockey One had played bantam house league hockey two had played nothing but house league hockey previously and the remainder were graduates of last years pee wee team playing their first year of bantam hockey Players should not necessarily be forced to play for the 0 team for the sole purpose of winning a provincial championship at all costs Neither should good calibre players be loaded onto a house league team just to win a trophy In a one day tournament Good competition should be the goal of all minor hockey executives Winning championships is nice but its not everything Players with superior ability who dont wish to play O M hockey should be asked to move up to the next age bracket in the house league where theyll be playing against boys of their own calibre and not depriving house league calibre players in their age bracket of the same competitive brand of hockey The tournament is a great thing if its used for the right purpose to give house league calibre players a chance to play against boys from other towns of the same calibre Acton Legion bantams were not entirely a house league calibre team It appears the problem never be solved until minor hockey In Acton is controlled by one governing body instead of two TnCounty and Legion have cooperated by holding Joint registrations the past two years but theres a lot of work to be done yet Theres plenty of fault on both sides its true The 0 M bantam team was kept from having a more competitive brand of TriCounty hockey than theyve been used to against triple A cities by lack of action by their own executive Something has to be done in Acton to make minor hockey competition more balanced If its not Acton can look forward to many more years of early elimination from playoffs a trophy every two years a real shellacking in the tournament in the off years and whats most frightening of all an increase In the rate of minor hockey dropouts The Acton Free Press Wednesday March Tanners will be back Wi Rock and Broom mostly corn Last Wednesday evening five teams from the local club visited the express sincere thanks to Messrs Harold coach Jan assistant coach and manager Steve of the Bantam Firefighter hockey team These men gave many hours towards the betterment of the boys and hockey The boys who remained with the team deserve a lot of credit although few in number and under great odds they never quit till the final whistle and sometimes after Acton should be proud of the men and boys who carried the double blue colors In County hockey action this past winter It would be a shot in the arm If the remaining teams not In the category could play in that series next season Special
