OUR READERS WRITE Bad odors overpower flowers 188 Churchill Acton Thuri July Dear Sirs I was just sitting here in my own home doing the Job I am fortunate enough to be able to work on at home when Actons obnoxious odour started to roll in through the open doors and windows I had previously been thinking what a beautiful day it was when I suddenly was hit by the desire to vomit sneeze and cough all at the same time I think Acton must be the worst smelling place in Canada if not the whole world I have done some travelling In my tune have lived In various countries in Europe including France and Germany which arc not noted for their sanitary conditions and I must say I have never come across a worse smell than the one which constantly pervades Acton particularly In the summer time Some of Actons older Inhabitants tell me I shall get used to it in time but we have lived here for almost five years now and Im still not used to it what is more I have no wish to get used to it either This year I have gone to a great deal of trouble and expense trying to Include flowers in my garden which have a sweet perfume I have stocks and nlcotianas and we have chosen roses for their perfume rather than their color or looks although I must say we have been fortunate In being able to combine both but what is the good of my trying to sweeten this end of town when other people seem to be doing their to make it the opposite I did rend the recent interview the Free Press published earlier this year with Mr of Beardmorc Co in which he said they are doing their best to overcome their problems and hope the will have the trouble completely solved by next year Meanwhile this year we would have to bear with them I certainly hope he was right for I am sure I am not alone in saying this problem is becoming more than my health will stand I do not wish to be forced to leave a house and garden to which I have become deeply attached so I hope the other smells will also be cleared up It Is always worse when the wind Is from the west as this is the prevailing wind in this area It is pretty frequent but there are other different smells which hit as when the wind is from the south or the southwest so I suspect that there is more than one source I know readers must be tired of reading my letters I have written several since we first came to Acton and nearly always on the same subject but I do not wish the of fenders to think we no longer object to this smell we do even more fervently than we did at first we had hoped it would have been cleared up by now However lets hope it will be by next year Margaret Wright Why summer hateful R R Acton July 1971 Dear Sin- Since early May of this year we have been spending every weekend away from home Sounds pretty nice eh Well not really You see we arc trying to store enough fresh air in our lungs to last us all the coming week The Tannery you know Of course we SHOULD be used to the smell by now after all this time of thirty years duration But somehow Its like hanging its pretty hard to get used to it Repeated calls to are answered very courteously But action everything In our power to remedy the situation No doubt they are I do know they created a vast lake of effluent that seethed and bubbled like some horrid witchs brew for over three months before they attempted to fill it up And the field across from my home is so waterlogged that an evil looking scummy water is lying on it and the sprays are adding more pollution to it daily Its a terrible thing to hate the summer isnt it and long for the winter when there is no more stink from the Tannery Or is there a smell Perhaps it Is Just our imagination Just today I called Mr Thatcher at 3 and asked him to come down and investigate the smell But he said he couldnt smell anything But isnt it nice that are working so hard to rectify the situation Makes a guy feel like someone really cares doesnt It Thanks for the opportunity to get this off my chest God knows theres no fresh air to get rid of Yours truly Mrs Sheila ORourke Acton Wednesday July 1971 Scouter writes to youth RR July Dear Sir An article in the Toronto Dally Star of last week concerning the Youth In Acton was very disturbing The Star quoted our Recreation Coordinator Brian Lamp bell and other young people as saying that there is nothing in Acton for the young to do Any comments that I make are not aimed at Mr Campbell himself but to the young people themselves I do not ask What do want but rather What arc you willing work for young people of Acton like most of counterparts in other communities handed to them on a silver and when it is not forthcoming they V rather than go out and work to igs better Ij towns that are at our disposal have swimming and boating Organizations like the Legion Hockey Minor baseball bo me best programs in Ontario Figure i music dancing are available to music and dancing girls Public skating I would like to menu organization In Acton that I am ta wrong Scouting in j ycar only manage to register Cubs For a population thp of our town we should have four amount Scouting Is not for all boys But it does provide a building for meetings a planned program dedicated leaders and unlimited opportunities for adventure But this is not handed to the boys The have to accept discipline from leaders and senior boys and they have to plan and work out their programs This is where Scouting falls down Boys do not wish to plan and work on their own meetings Parents are not willing to assist their sons nor come to meetings to see them receive awards Their rubs off on their sons with the result that boys do not sta in Scouting for the full four years With few older Scouts to assist in the training of the new cubs coming to Scouts this leaves an extra burden on the leaders The average life of a Scout leader today is less that two years And so the cycle goes on I would like to sa that the above does not include all of our boys parents or leaders We have an active group of 13 Scouts many eager parents and good leadership has the best in camping equipment and campsites available for our use We have an active Group Committee excellent sponsor in the Rotary Club and backing from The Scout and Guide Ladies All this is for the boys The girls also have Guiding with all its benefits for young girls and ladies So I say to Actons Youth lets make use of the facilities that are provided for your use and work to make them better Yours very truly Murray Harrison 1st Acton Scout Troop On education negotiations reference to the board negotiations Firstly I would suggest tha give more thought lie makes to the press for recent issues he contradicts himself statements are neither rational conclusive and amount to so often a data which appear to have been so together that nobody gets a clear cut idea a what hes talking about For a man of his position to even suggest let alone state that the County Education Board doesnt want to negotiate borders on the thinking of an unreasonable person Let him understand right now that this Board I am sure Is eager to settle but not at unreasonable terms or conditions which would be detrimental to the taxpayers pockets A line has to be drawn somewhere One of his statements to the effect that the annual increment is not a wage increase is the height of To him I would say this let not these negotiations be conducted on a basis let both sides put til will on one side stop making absurd statements to the press negotiate in good faith with a sense of realisation and ob jective at heart and get those of this profession a reasonable and satisfactory settlement Lastly to the teachers concerned I would say this its tune that Mr Ramautarsingh was removed For when the negotiators and District Executive can recommend a new contract offered they must think it is a fair offer Due to the above mans your public relations have reached an alltime low and good public relations are Appraisal of the system showed that about per cent of total road miles and about per cent of bridges are deficient now or will become so in five years Cost of remedying the deficiencies is estimated
