The Acton Free Press Wednesday August Social Services available to all in north end of Halton DESCRIBED BY Councillor Norm Elliott as a Woody eyesore the school creek and its banks arc due for some cleaning up Elliott said last week hes never seen the water in the creek so low or the weed growth as bad as it has been this summer This photo was taken Thursday afternoon from the Main Street bridge Staff Photo Elliott claims One of the least known but important free services available to people in North carries the forbidding title of Family Social Services and Family Counselling Theres an office in Georgetown downstairs at St where the Health Units located It Is open Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays Therela another in the county building at Milton open on Tuesdays and Thursdays They are staffed by Mrs an attractive family counsellor anxious to give assistance to anyone from the north end of the county Mrs referrals arc accepted from private Individuals doctors lawyers the court public health people schools police any responsible people or just a request from a person in trouble What Is family counselling Solve themselves Mrs Doldrums emphasized that the counsellor docs not solve the problems people bring to them They must solve it themselves Her funUlon is enable people to cope with their own problems interpreting them so they tan do something about them This may be done on a family parents single individual or marriage scale depending on circumstances The majority of cases handled from the North Halton offices are marital with parentchild or Individual problems next In that order rhcy could be financial Inter personal or number of things Biggest peoblem Mrs Dzldrums says it is communications People Just dont seem to know how to share their thoughts and feelings with others Mrs says It Is the big problem area and has nothing to do wltli class or station It Is general It generates feelings such as fear anger frustration Although the lack of communications hits both men and women it is the women who respond most and are more apt to call for help when they have problems they cant seem to solve Men stoical Men are trained to grin and bear it feeling their problems will disappear If they are stoical about them Mrs said Men also seem to resent It more if they come to seek help presumably frustrated because they I work out their own problems She sees the younger people as a heartening side to the story arc more aware of family social services and witling to seek help more open and not ashamed to seek opinions using the service for a sounding board Mrs believes this stems from the present system of education which familiarizes young people with guidance counsellors social workers and family education courses When people are referred to her Mrs emphasizes It is up to them to carry out her suggestions All interviews are confidential and any information divulged during an Interview is never passed on unless the person involved requests It She tries when possible to co ordinate and consolidate all the services the person needs No cost Unfortunately many people In the north end of the county are not aware of the services available There Is no cost to the Individual Family Social Service is provided by the county and subsidized by the province There is no connection with the welfare program of the county Mrs Dzidrums points out It Is a completely independent operation under program director James Grey and the deputy director J Vivian Mrs is well equipped both educationally and with years experience In social work to contend with the problems she faces Her working day consists of three or four interviews as well as other duties involved In sorting out peoples problems She is most familiar with the Georgetown area because this is where the bulk of her problems occur since it is the largest centre of population in the north end of the county She feels because they are smaller and the population more homogeneous that Acton Milton and the two townships of and maybe dont have the same number of problems encountered in Georgetown But she also points out the proximity of the office to Georgetown people and lack of knowledge in other communities about the program may be a factor which influences numbers Just dial The only requirement for a person to arrange an appointment to see Mrs is a telephone call to in Georgetown and she will take It from there Or if you are closer to Milton a call to the Milton office at is all that needed Although the service has been available since 1965 In Halton It is still a relatively new program for many people unacquainted with services the county does provide There are also offices in Burlington with the headquarters situated In Milton Library a jewel but grounds no crown Grounds around the Acton library and school creek have become a real eyesore said Councillor Norm Elliott and he thinks its time something was done about it Councillor Elliott brought the matter to councils attention at their regular meeting Tuesday August 17 claiming he has never seen the water in the creek as low or weed growth in the area as bad as it has been this Elliott pointed out the area has the potential for being the beauty spot in town In his words The library is a jewel that should have a setting to set it off Councillor Peter Marks wondered if council shouldnt petition owners of the land to fix it up Is it not the county board If they have a piece of property that is on maybe should write them and ask them to clean it up Marks suggested Continuing program Mayor Is felt any program to clean up the area should be a continuing one He thought perhaps a weekly or monthly maintenance could be established Council referred the matter to public works and utilities committee for a recomm endation Haltons Queen Pat Murray loses preliminary round Competing for the first time in the C E Dairy Princess competition Pat Murray of Halton lost
