the Junior championship itself was to be able to see the Acton Community Centre filled almost to capacity as it was Saturday night Fans exactly hanging from the rafters as followers of the Tanner championship team tell us they were when close to 1 500 squeezed their way into the arena but empty seats were few and far between and certainly in my own memory and thit of younger Ram fans it was as large a crowd as has ever attended game of any kind here It was heartwarming to sec members of Acton s two previous provincial sports teams the hockey Tanners and the 1947 baseball Intermediates cheering every Acton goal with just as much enthusiasm as the regular Ram crowd They no doubt remembered the wonderful support they received when they the town banner into provincial competition During the last two decades fan support of Acton entries in any sport has gone up and down like a roller coaster and many fans who would hive been labelled diehards in the days that Acton was highly regarded in provincial sports circles abandoned their interest in the welfare of local teams Saturday night many of them came back not because re particularly fascimted by lacrosse or because they didn have anything better to do They came because of Ac ton knew the Rams had a chance to put Acton back where it once was on the sports map of Ontario and they want to let any chance they had to help them do it slip by As it turned out the backing the team received Saturday night was probably as big a factor in the win as anything Team captain Bob told fans sincerely after thegame We couldnt have won it without you As one fan put it following the Tonight the Rams have helped bridge the generation gap There were people in that arena that haven been there in years Let s hope he s right and that all Acton teams can look forward to the same kind of support the Rams received To the team and management congratulations on a great victory You worked hard for it you deserve it To the fans the Rams have put the capital A back in Acton Let make sure it stays there Forgotten midst the excitement of the victory celebration following Rams championship win was the fact the game was far from a runaway and could have easily gone either waj Art Sinfield gave Brockville a lead at 3 25 of the opening period when he fired a high shot over Gary Turkosz shoulder whde Bob Turkosz was sitting out a slashing penalty Rams appeared tight and began shooting wildly in an effort to get on the scoreboard Finally after 10 minutes and seconds of frustration Bob Turkosz connected on a bounce shot from about feet out Stu charges and Sinfield went off together for slashing 14 Just before Stu McCulloch brought the team to life and the fans to their feet with his first blockbusting rush of the night barged his way through the defence and passed to Doug Hons who beat Larry Herrington for Rams second goal Herrington came up with egg on his face when he fanned on Bob slow dribbler at had possession of the ball for almost a minute as he circled the net twice before shooting Mike cashed in Bob pass to close out first period scoring 33 seconds later First period score Rams When George scored from Mike early in the second period it looked like Rams would turn the game Into a rout but Essos quickly eliminated that possibility with two fast goals by Gary Brisson and Jack Penalty shot Brockville could have cut the Acton lead to one goal if t missed the net complctelj on a penalty shot at the five minute mark Referee Bert Naylor awarded Belmore the free shot after he was hauled down by McCulloch on a breakaway With the score Rams on the attack again Bob scored from just outside the crease Craig Weldon upped the Acton lead to and Bob deked out of his pants at to give Rams a five goal leadftJ Once bounced back With Harry Barens off for highsticking Ian Brown scored and slightly over a minute before the period ended Belmore connected to narrow the Acton lead to Goalies hot Red hot by Herrington and Gary in the third period kept sharpshooters on both sides tearing their hair out while the huge crowd looked on in amazement and applauded each save A toal by Bob Turkosz In the first minute was disallowed because he was in the crease and after that was literally unbeatable as he turned aside every Acton shot Meanwhile slowly picked away at the Rom lead tew fans budged when Jack scored at But when and Brisson teamed up on a pretty passing ploy and cut the Acton lead to at 10 the nailbiting began The bench went wild shortly after as Ian Brown took Gary Brisson pass and whipped the ball past Turkosz to tie the score Excitement great Excitement reached a peak in the final five minutes of regulation time First Gary hurled himself through midair to block shot Then beat Bob and Chris Sargent on breakaways Play moved from end to end with lightning speed With less than a minute remaining Mike broke in on alone but his bounce shot hit the post and the game went into overtime G A rim Hcrr
