Fine Fair beautiful weather The officers and directors of the annual Acton Fall Fair eclipsed all previous efforts in their effort Gate receipts exceeded records and the quality of exhibits attained their usual high standard But the crowning effect which made the two day event such a success was the glorious sunny weather after days of rain It almost seemed as if the officers and directors of the Fair had ordered a beautiful day and despite the most gloomy predictions they achieved their goal The skies started to clear Friday night and Saturday dawned bright and sunny That was all the program needed to attract thousands of patrons Sunday rain resumed as if it cleared up for the Fair It was obvious early on Saturday that Acton would he bursting at the seams with visitors Cars were parked ail over the main business and park ends of town early in the morning and trucks poured into the park with horses ponies pigs sheep cattle and THE CREDIT RIVER flows peacefully through the nearby over walked into something that looked as though the Irish Republican Army had been using ft for a couple years as a testing ground for bombs A new addition about the third since I came here was in its glorious death throes means it might be finished In six months It was begun a year ago It wain t so bad during last winter and spring because most of the construction was outside brick piling and steel work In fact it was quite lively especially in the spring with the Italian workers ogling the girl- through the windows and being ogled back and drinking beer on the Job and yelling and laughing But during the summer the termites the inside workers got into the mausoleum and the result for a while at least is complete chaos The termites are the electricians plumbers floor and celling men and others of that ilk If you t tripping over an electric cable or walking through some fresh poured concrete you re liable to be showered with sparks by a welder working overhead library ready there is no cafeteria and the gym is not finished These are pretty important areas in a school that size 75 years ago Taken from the issue of the Free Press Thursday October 1S9G At the meeting of the town council on Mondav Mr John Kennedy presented the plan of a new survey of the block of land in rear of lots 8 and on Maui St The block contains 12 fine building lots with a new street running through the centre The street will connect with that running alongside Knox church from the Main St to the public park and has been named Knox Street It will make a new and convenient entrance to the park Vat a Hon days are over and it was fitting there should be Rally Day in the Sunday The Methodist church school room was decorated with flowers fruit and autumn leav and there was an abundance of bright and cheerful music There were present Pupils at S No Lunehouse who obtained over per cent in September examinations include Earl Marshall Willie Marshall Jas Scott Willie Olive Marshall Mamie Mary Osmond Frank Moore Fred Swackhammer Charlie Lane Eva Meredith Nellie Wdbe Duncan Sharp Ida Ford is teacher Seven hundred telegraph operators went on strike at the Their places are being rapidly filled The new county council scheme for representation is anything but fair and equitable and looks like an old fashioned scheme It would give Acton Milton and as division two elected representatives Did you ever try to teach poetry with a blasting a few feet It ike trying to have an elegant garden party in the middle of a monsoon Did you ever try to teach anything in a room that has one naked light bulb the back and Is So full or somebody elses junk equipment that you see your students if you had lights Just to compound the confusion the numbers of all the rooms have been changed Thus my old room 269 is now or 204 I still not sure which Tunc was when a little gradenincr would ask Sir can you tell me where Mr Jackhn room is I would answer with sublime confidence Sure Just along the hall to the boiler room turn right and it about three doors down on your left Now I haven a clue where Mr Jacklln s room is I think he moved somewhere and the place is so big I couldnt tell the kid how to get there d I did know It took me half an hour to find the new staff lounge which turned out to be a square bleak underground hole with no windows and a couple of light bulbs hanging from the ceiling In the proposed n bastard word if there ever was one the windows were scaled off because it would be Then it was learned that it wouldn be airconditioned Can you imagine what it will be like in there with the smells of cooking and five hundred bodies on a hut day 50 years ago Taken from the Issue of the Fret Press of Thursday September 1921 The attendance at the fair was quite satisfactory The motor cars were there in profusion and were com parked in the grove of and along the judging ring The merrygoround men seem fated with mishaps when coming to Acton Again this year there was a wreck on the way The parade of prize animals headed by Acton Citizens Band was much appreciated Hie three young ladies who had the arduous task of naming the finest looking and best dressed bachelor on the grounds finally named Jack Bell at five clock He wins Farmer prize The member of Parliament the hospital nurse and the elect lady of a county official were not long in scattering after making their awards in the baby show Three fine youngsters under one year were exhibited Of course each mother thought her laddie should have the red ribbon There will be a threecornered fight in Halton for the federal election People Political party named John Ford the Liberals nominated W A Fisher and the Conservatives named Anderson as their candidate Acton sent large delegations to all of the conventions Interest is already keen in the campaign farm machinery exhibits Streets were lined five and six deep at some points to view the parade perhaps not quite as large as some others but certainly a standout both from the viewpoint of spectators and as a magnet to draw visitors to the Fair Especially impressive was the appearance of the O P P Golden Helmets and the Lions from on their mini bikes Actons prize winning Citizens Band front and the Junior champion Opti Knights from brought up the rear with the Georgetown Girts Pipe Band sand wiched in between gave the parade variety Floats were well designed and tastefully done with the Figure Skating Club s entry exceptional Friday nights variety show was a fast paced entertainment timed to entertain a bulging community centre Of course the big attraction was the crowning of Miss Acton Fair The grounds were hectic with ac tivity Saturday afternoon as the various competitions were judged and the OptiKrughts and Golden Helmets performed for huge crowds The midway was crowded exhibits in the arena were seen by thousands and commercial were very pleased with the interest shown in their products rho baby show was again a success and judges had their hands full picking the top babies Poultry cattle and horses drew more thousands to their areas of the park The 1971 Acton Fall Fair set a record for the Saturday show with a estimated 7500 filing through the gates coupled with another who entered the grounds Friday night Saturday s dance attracted another Fairs everywhere are experiencing a rise in attendance as interest increases The Acton show becomes more entertaining Officers and directors are to be commended on the success of this years event which goes to prove ogam that cooperation and enthusiasm seem even able to control the weather Editorial Pagr Wednesday September 22 Screened violence damaging The St Marys JournalArgus points out that after many years of television entertainment it is being publicly admitted that a great deal of damage has been done to childrens lives by the violence they have witnessed on TV Some recent startling studies sponsored by the USA government arc showing that child behaviour is actually directly linked to the TV violence It really shouldnt be an eye- opener of course because we have always maintained if good influences on tend to make people better than it stands to reason other types will also Of course some people may not realize the extent of TV violence These US studies reveal that in 1969eight out of 10 plays stressed violence there were also an average of eight violent episodes on every program hour of TV showing TV people point out they arc not to blame insist they are merely reacting to public demand The public wants violence and they are getting it The AdvanceTimes comments that the type of sport and entertainment we support would seem to prove we like our diversions rough and tough and are shelling out millions of dollars a year to keep it that way At the some time there is an increasingly concerned group of people who feel the movie and TV moguls are going too far especially when they glorify violence as they have done with motorcycles gangs and others Along with the AdvanceTimes we believe authentic representations of World War battles are more ceptable then the cookedup version of producers Todays children should understand their forbears went to war and risked their lives to protect things they held dear Men have found it necessary at frequent intervals to home and family They opposed violence with force but for a good reason Violence for its own sake is wrong But as long as we arc prepared to pay for it or tolerate it senseless violence is here to stay It seems to me that school architects are in a class by themselves like carpenters who would never tackle anything bigger than an outdoor privy Perhaps I wrong them Perhaps they are hampered by rigid budgets But I can imagine any firm that specializes in designing schools asked to build something that combined aesthetics and utility However there a bright side to things public address system is not working rhc bells are not working These are two boons and I hope they never get them working None of the teachers has gone stircrazy jet despite the architect fetish for rooms In fact there a certain gaiety and esprit de corps among the staff die sort of thinn that always emerges in a great disaster like a bombing blitz or a paralyzing blizzard And the kids love it Kids love confusion especially in their teens when they begin to resent bitterly regulations rules and rigidity Flic can wander through the ruins pretend they got lost chat with the work men and be Into for class That living ac k issues 20 years ago Taken from the issue students who obtained highest standing in Conservatory examinations Denise Coles and Maureen Ktnread Both are pupils of Mrs ops desk RECEIVED a letter from Vivian deputy director of the County Social and Family Services thanking the Free Press for an article on Family Counselling Service in the August Issue We have already seen results in calls coming in to our office Mr Vivian said It is always difficult to let people know of services that are available and certainly an article such as you provided seems to be one of the best ways to make the service known We in turn give credit to Brendan who alerted us to the service and the fact few people were aware it existed He had occasion to assist a couple in financial difficulty who were advised by some official that the husband could quit his job and apply for welfare In this instance the husband wanted to work not loaf and sort out his own problems bo he rejected that solution Brendan advised him to see the county family counselling service counsellor and go from there Hope he was successful WORST World War air raid on Iondon England by the full force of the German at the tune the greatest military striking force ever created killed about 1400 people North American drivers ironically kill that many people on our high ways every eight or nine days Makes you wonder t if YES IT S TRUE the writer doesn t know very much about horses as members of the Trail Riders are pointing out Iast week we ran a picture of the Trail Rider show with riders lined up to compete in the various At least thats what we thought Turns out some of the lined up on horses were only spec tators and the picture almost an faux pas according to one irate member of the Trail Riders Shucks you horse people will have to display more patience with writers like me who don t know such things as why a nder holds the reins in the left hand knowledge since acquired or the difference between an Arabian and a Quarter Horse SOME PEOPLE are asking whether Acton annual fall fair one of the best ever was partly a meeting of political figures as well Halton Whiting officially opened the show Friday West George Kerr Minister of the Environment attended both days and candidates in the provincial field were plentiful too They included liberal Bob New Democratic Party Walter both contesting George Kerr seat and Cam Lush over from the area Cam a well known farmer and former reeve of the township is the Liberal candidate in where he will attempt to unseat John Root It was our first meeting with Bob McNutt and Walter Mulkewich and they both seemed very likeable people They know of course they have a tough row to hoc if they hope to defeat George Kerr who probably has had more favorable publicity this last term than any other cabinet minister in the Government But both are tackling the Job as if they mean to win We are scheduled for an interview with Bob this week to find out more of his background Walter Mulkewich clued us in on a few personal items at the fair such as the fact as a former Club member he is very interested in fairs and farming He was raised on a farm near where he participated in man of the 4 H Club ac tivities including judging livestock He is now a high school teacher GEORGE KERR isn t immune to the liberal side of the election picture either He was invited to take a liberal pamphlet at the Fair which purported to show how the Tory Government took of Bob Nixon ideas and either acted too late did too little or nothing at all He accepted We spotted George mulling over the pamphlet while he tapped his foot at the Old Fiddler competitions He turned to us mildly indignant and said Bob should watch what he has in his literature This isnt true He pointed to an item where it said Bob Nixon proposed a Department of the Environment to deal with pollution problems and an independent environmental council to assess the war against pollution In red ink the pamphlet said the Tories are establishing such a department but have only promised to consider an environmental council Not so says George The Act provides for an environmental council with independent members We t argue with the province a Number One pollution expert I suppose we probably have some exaggerations in our literature too he thoughtfully conceded THE ACTON FREE PRESS PHONE 853 Business and Editorial Office Inaccuracies always bother George Kerr no matter where they originate PROBABLY ONE of the most embarrassing features of the Acton Fair for members of the Ontario Provincial Police Golden Helmets who performed for thousands here was an accident which happened to their troupe on Highway 401 Friday It sent two of the ridersJohn Arnold and William MacDonald to hospital The Golden Helmets were westbound on when one bike hit a hole went out of control and crashed into another Both riders fell and skidded for some distance ending up in hospital They were returning from a performance when the mishap occurred Needless to say they were embarrassed especially when one Acton lady who had seen the accident enquired about the condition of the two riders Fortunately there are two spare riders for emergencies and the thousands who watched the spec tacle never knew the difference Very impressive display Commentator of course was Corporal Peter Campbell who was well liked when he served on the O P detachment in Acton and wound up marrying Liz Kirby from Eden Mills Ride master was another almost local boy- Corporal Don Bell from Milton THAT yearold privy rescued from I jmehouse has become the centrepiece of international curiosity according to an article in the fimes by city editor Mike Solomon The general manager of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority Harry Watson said they have received hundreds of telephone calls letters and newspaper dippings since the story came to light One of the letters from a Mildred Quunby of a Harbor Guld Prairie du Chien Wisconsin said The story of your historical structure interested us and whatever you would be good enough to tell us about the happenings in connection with it would be much appreciated Apparently Prairie du on the banks of the Mississippi River has an old privy Itself and folks out there might be interested in a old privy battle Says Mrs the privy we have may be older than yours It is believed to have been built about About the same tune as the Wisconsin backhouse was making the news another in Claxton Missouri was declared a State Shrine by the Missouri State Legislature And it seems there is a society for the preservation of old privies in the same community Of course everyone realizes this is information COUNCILis still debating whether that wedgeshaped piece of land at the Silvercreek should remain a roadside park Question is who Is going to look after the park and pay for the upkeep if councillors decide the township should look after it
