OUR READERS WR For peace Dear Sir lreadwithagreatdealof Interest Thomans column entitled The Peace Sign Mark of the Traitor Inasmuch as I am a proud wearer of this symbol and In light of my personal commitments which involve the intellectual pursuit of truth and understanding between all men I feel obliged to present the other of the story I do not wish to engage in an argument pertaining to the origin of the symbol because Rev has researched his topic carefully and has informed us of the origin quite accurately I do not feel that the origin Is as Important as the reasons why some of us proudly wear this symbol I would take this opportunity to point out that one of the most celebrated Christian celebrations Easter derives its name from a Pagan Goddess Eostre While I cannot presume to speak for all wearing the Peace Symbol with justification I can outline the reasons most of us are not ashamed to proclaim what this sign means to us We are not looking for an alternative to the Cross of Christ although a great number of aware individuals are in fact turning away from the Church and organized religion This action has been motivated because some of us feel that the Leaders of the Church be they ministers priests rabbis or whatever have become politicians orators of magnificent abilities who we feel have forgotten to teach have not confined themselves to Interpretation of the Bible for those of us who require this help But we have not turned away from God we believe In God we know that Man Is Gods greatest creation we are just not sure any more If God Is for Religion as it exists today Because we cannot accept the rigidity and narrow being expressed by some religious leaders or because we choose not to worship In a church does this label us Christian Are we traitors because we abhor the concept of war because we believe that the sixth commandment should be obeyed by all thou shall not kill murder Are we traitors because some of us speak out against questionable authoritarianism that the thrall of totalitarian Ism of both the right and left must be shaken in a universal desire to recapture the authority of truth Do you consider us Intellectual simply because we can no longer accept knowledge as a manipulation of man and nature as opposite forms but Is a means by which we can libera mankind from the destructive power of fear Are we extremists because we believe In the rebirth of faith and confidence in the human person to rediscover dignity integrity and selfrealization which are the inalienable rights of man who may now guide change by means of conscious purpose In the light of rational experience or because we wish to explore for ourselves the contradictory meanings and which are given today to such terms as democracy freedom Justice love peace brotherhood and God Do you really believe we are radicals because we wish to clear the way for a foundation of genuine world history not In terms of nations or race or culture but In terms of man In relation to God to himself his fellow man and that part of the universe which reaches beyond self interest We wear the Peace Symbol proudly to proclaim to all mankind our desire for WORLD PEACE we believe that the domination of man over man can no longer be justified by any appeal to God or nature We strive for a world society of human beings practicing brotherly love as we deem God Intended The Acton Free Press Wednesday January COLES SLAW ignored us Including the crew who carried everyone else luggage on board while we struggled with ours Down below decks we went where a helpful steward grabbed some of our bags and showed us to our cabins The Gold Coast Railroad It a mecca for steam buffs from all over the continent Charlie Is a railroad man so it was Imperative we take a trip on the old steamer that runs only on Sunday afternoons Monday we headed for Miami down the coast and the docks where the ship Sunward was waiting to load minus the services of the dock workers who carry your luggage off and on the craft Yes we ended up struggling up the gang plank loaded down with luggage cameras and clothes after a pleasant Interlude in the walling room where we four travelstained veterans contrasted sharply with impec cably dressed Americans boarding In nigh fas don To pass the time Charlie and I staged an Interview on his tape recorder In an effort to give the Impression we were merely there to run off a radio show It worked Everyone He opened the door and my wife and I stumbled Into a four by six enclosure with a bath I figured at first we had got into a clothes closet by mistake but it turned out to be the cabin with a bathroom almost as big alongside Not quite certain I enquired of the helpful steward who assured me I was In the cabin not the anteroom He patted the upper and lower bunk to reassure me Later on I wondered how he could be so pleasant and helpful when I found out the hours and time he worked Most of the fellows on the ship looking after passenger comforts were from Jamaica Haiti or some other island In the Caribbean and I developed a rapport with them especially the fellow members of the Commonwealth More next week Foster and Lynn Sportsmens Show Yours sincerely Terry Howe World Peace Symbol signifies peace Dear Sir In a recent in the Free Press Rev S M Thoman condemned the peace symbol as being a mark of Communism Nad Germany and Lie sign of a traitor He also seems to be very concerned about the takeover of Communism In America time that people Including Rev Thoman realize that unless they start lodo something about nuclear disarmament and war there won be an America for the Communists to take over Ministers are supposed to encourage peace love and brotherhood but he only seems concerned with slapping down the one peace sign there is I Rev Thoman should realize that today tins symbol signifies peace Maybe it did mean all those things In the and but now it means peace It too bad that when the clergy speak out they dont have anything to say Although disappointed in the daytime attendance at the 1971 Acton Sportsmens Show In ember chairman Morris Staley said he feels the Sportsmens Association can learn the fishing and casting derbies drew only one entrant each Weather burl Unsuitable weather conditions forced the model boat competition to relocate on the Elizabeth Drive side of Fairy Lake on the
