OUR READERS WRITE Cant accept evolution R 1 Acton Dear Sir At the of prolonging a rather pointless controversy I wish to add another dimension to the points of view expressed by Mrs Marchmcnt and Mrs Harris 1 and many other scientists cannot accept the Theory of Evolution as an explanation of man origin The only alternative therefore Is the Biblical count of Creation 1 personally feel that It takes far less faith to accept the Biblical account than it does to accept Ihe Theory of FVolution do not however object to my children being exposed to this theory in school providing It is presented merely as an theory As a matter of fact those points that can be proven by the evolutionists are not at all unharmonlous with the Biblical account With particular reference to the letter from Mrs Harris wish lo point out that there la presently a great deal or doubt as to the actual age of the Earth and the appearance of Man Much recent reliable evidence Indicates that the Earth may only be approximately nine to fourteen thousand years old One should also be aware that there Li a great deal of debate as to whether the seven days of Creation as mentioned in the Bible seven days as we know them or seven periods of time It is an unimportant point Mrs Janet M Armstrong Praises student volunteer Dear Sir Every Friday afternoon at the Ontario School for the Deaf Milton the retarded children from the Sunshine School spend an enjoyable hour of fun and Instruction the pool When the small children start some of them of such short stature that it is impossible for them to be in the water without a helper who also assists them In overcoming their fear of water There are some volunteers one in particular Is a young girl named Carol Patterson Carol Is a Grade 13 student of Acton High School who drives to Milton once a week dons her bathing suit and gets Into the pool to the children doing things the Instructor wishes them to try She Is interested in children and the children respond to her pleasantness the past Carol has been a counsellor at Camp Bel wood a summer camp for retardates and one of her teachers has Ihe highest praise for her as a bnbysltter as well as being an excellent student She Is planning to attend Mohawk College next year to take a course in child care We so often bear of young people who take no interest In other people or things that it is nice to know of a helpful young person such as Carol Her parents have Just reason to be proud of their daughter Concerning water supply Acton Dear Mr I would like to clarify a few points of interest regarding the discussion of extending the town water lines south on to service nine properties We received a detailed report from over two months ago This was a very detailed and comprehensive report on their investigation regarding alleged water pollution I as carried out spraying operating on the Marshall farm It seems to me to prove pretty that the spraying operations polluted our wells namely the sodium chloride salt content We had a sample of our water analysed by them In September 1971 and the reading was ppm We were told then that this additional amount of salt could be Injurious to anyone with heart disabilities as the amount of sodium chloride in drinking water is around 12 would tike to make it clear that we have not been approached the Beardmorc and Co Ltd or the twon of Acton nor have we tried to put pressure on them In any way fcxicpt for the Kevin and possibly the Ihe Co does not bring us water nor have we asked them to do so We are still using the water from our wells although at times especially in the summer months the taste of salt is quite nnticvoble I can state that the Forty Bernards and 0 Rourkes arc continuing to use their own source of water and are not supplied by the company although I do know that they would supply It If requested On one occasion about two years ago water was carried in here by Beardmorc Co lid and we were properly appreciative as on that occasion we were at fault ourselves During all the times we have had communications with s we have been treated with courtesy and patience two virtues I am sorry 1 am sadly missing I am sure that any negotiations that may ensure over this proposed water service will be no exception I would reiterate that to this date we have had no communications In this regard Thank you Yours truly Sheila O County council not lily white Feb 1972 Dear Mr 1 with Reeve McKenzie approach of let bury the past and work for improved health services However after reading the Free Press reports I would be remiss in responsibilities by not replying It appears councillors have potted each other on the back and assured no one could fault the health budget or the count council Other reports that many problems can be laid at the feet of Chamberlain Medical Officer of Health and Miss Director of Nursing Nothing could be farther from the truth The following is of interest and should answer some of the questions posed by Alton councillors Bull M 0 H experiencing difficulties bucking Count Council 1965Nursing staff having difficulty negotiating with count council This resulted in the health unit being grey listed the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario This was eventually lifted but there still seems to be some concern that professional staff are more accountable to the count personnel manager than to the and Director of Nursing 196 Dr Bull left and Hay hired 1963Dr Ha fired and replaced by his assistant Stewart No assistant hired Stewart was a man in his seventies and quite content to be a caretaker M 0 Council seemed satisfied with this arrangement 1969- Part tune O H hired untd Chamberlain took office in June 1970 Important to note that for at least ten years there was an assistanlM OH but the county has remained without one sine 1968 even though population has increased It is obvious the board of health and county council did not fulfill their responsibilities and have been negligent areas One of these is lack of follow up on a grand Jury report that was presented three years ago to Mr Justice Lacourriere It that the shortage of nurses be full investigated and steps taken to recruit adequate staff Thi report goes on to say that at least 33 nurses are needed to fulfil the vital work of tnt health unit With this report tabled and only on staff council members ire quoted as say we simp cannot hire more nurses We do not have that kind of mane request for more staff was vetoed by count council for budget reasons After eight years of tlus one can point the finger it county council Lets not suddenly have it appear that the director of nursing is wholl responsible for staff shortages While still warden Ookes suggested that Dr Chamberlain was empire building to even think of an assistant Surely he must be aware that it is a battle to even bring things up to the calibre of ten years ago Oakes is amazed at community workers becoming frustrated I never cease to be amazed even incredulous at his remarks His lack of insight into community health matters has added great to the frustration of man lm sure Yes lets bury the past but not by painting the counts council lily white and hoisting blame on health professionals who have managed to give mm unit service despite the man complex problems From 1967 until Chamberlain arrived last year Miss leave has been without the backing of a competent medical officer and has earned an impossible work load On top of this she has been saddled with a narrow and ill informed councilat least on health matters 1 have the greatest respect for Miss and feel the new community Ice committee should be aware that but for her the turnover of nurses would have been greater and the service to the community much less With progressive men such as the new warden Jim Swan borough community service chairman David Coons and sincere committee members I think things will start to happen Since rel Set
