year members The Acton Free Press Wednesday March Anniversary highlight for Devonshire chapter The following is the annual report of the Duke of Devonshire chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire Acton Ontario Through the year there were tei regular and one executive meetings held at the homes of members On one occasion after a brief business meeting members of Duke of Devonshire chapter joined the Lakeside Chapter Acton to hear the Provincial Pen Pal secretary Mrs speak Average attendance was down due to illness Three members had perfect attendance for the year The flag was carried by the Standard bearer and In her absence table standard used The Standard was displayed Decoration Day carried Remembrance Day on display at the birthday anniversary luncheon and at a members funeral The Regent presided at all the meetings during the year Secretaries report A summary of the secretaries Annual report reports are as follows Members are receiving Echoes Magazine A write up of the birthday anniversary was sent in and a deceased members name was sent to the remembrance page The flower and gift convener sent cards and flowers to the sick and bereaved Education secretary and the Regent presented pens to students showing the most progress during the year one to each elementary school Money was presented to music festival and to the centennial library Services at Home and Abroad secretary reported that an excellent bate of new articles of clothing knitted goods and nursery bags also a bale of good used clothing were sent to headquarters Holy week services were attended at a local A tree was planted in the cemetery In honor of deceased members for Decoration Day ChBptcr members assisted with the planting of flowers on graves A wreath was placed at the Cenotaph Remembrance Day Nov 11 Local donations Members participated with cancer and I B drives Local donations were sent to Halton a aid Decoration Day committee and Canadian Legion Donation to Provincial headquarters was to the Lucy Morrison fund and to National headquarters the travel fund for high school students Korean fund for powdered milk shipping and Peace Garden funds Money making project was a tag day at the local fall fair the money useo for Centennial library to purchase books and general IODE work Also by donations from members The citizenship secretary read a paper on that subject and for roll call each member told of some thin a they had done towards being a good citizen Obligations fulfilled by Lakeside Chapter efforts of the Services at Home and Abroad committee a bale of one hundred and thirty nine articles including twelve quilts and valued at two hundred and sixtyfive dollars was packed for the Save the Children Fund Pocket books were sent overseas to the armed services This committee report amounts to six hundred dollars and cents for the year efforts Donations As a membei of the National Organization we donated to Canadian Scene Gordon Scholarship Fund Commonwealth Relations Fund Korean Projects Fund Peace Garden Fund Shipping Fund and Canadian Overseas and Relief our donations went to the Furniture Fund Eye clinic Tor Indians and Eskimos NWT Incubator Fund Lucy Morrison Memorial Fund and Special Representative Fund Locally we contributed to the Decoration Day Committee Canadian Legion and Poppy Fund N H A C P A and the Tinker Bell Nursery School Varied pro mi Programs throughout the year covered a variety of interests Three pot luck suppers preceeded meetings and we had a sound movie on Ontario Place We had slides of a Mediterranean cruise taken by a local High School class and one of our members We also saw pictures of a trip to New Zealand with stopovers in Hong Kong Japan and Hawaii We had the Provincial Pen Pals Secretary Mrs Kloepfer speak to us about and Mr R R Parker gave us an insight into different aspects of pollution One of our members demonstrated Flower arranging at the march meeting Entertainers Winning groups from the Music Festival entertained us and Marianne Coles sang in June A very interesting report was given by Grace after she had attended the National Convention in Newfoundland Some of our members went to in the spring and enjoyed a Fashion Show sponsored by trie Edward Johnson Chapter Five members attended the Area Conference In Guelph in October and found it very informative and interesting The members express their appreciation to our Regent Mrs A Orr and to the executive for their leadership and enthusiasm during the year The year was a year of good fellowship and satisfying accomplishments and it is hoped that the coming year with its challenges and needs will find Lakeside Chapter members ready to do their best Helen Jocque Secretary Hazel I Orr Regent I The press and public realtlons convener sent notices to the local paper of meetings coming events and annual report A stormy weather tea was attended at Manor Waterloo where a member resides A anniversary tea of the John Milton Chapter Milton and a tour of homes sponsored by the John Mutrie chapter were attended by members Luncheon held The birthday anniversary of the Duke of Devonshire chapter of the 1 0 was held with luncheon at the Acton Meadows club house In June complete with a cake decorated by the regent At this luncheon meeting Mrs Holmes and Mrs McLeod received their year membership pins Mrs showed interesting slides of her trip to Germany Austria Switzerland and France at the Sept meeting In October each member was asked to bring a friend to the meeting for membership drive I O D E on the move Join us Clippings for scrap book were handed in by members at one meeting Christinas dinner Mrs H R Elliott was the hostess In December for a delicious Christmas dinner After exchange of gifts by the members Elliott conducted the chapter on a tour to see and hear the pipe organ he had Installed Plants were sent to Maple and Kelly nursing homes at Christmas time We would like to thank the Acton Free Press for coverage our meetings the Regent conveners and all who have helped during the year Pearl Young Regent Jean Johnston Obituary Mrs Verhagen funeral March 3 service was held at the Shoemaker funeral home Acton March for Artie Junna R Rock wood Mrs Vcrhagcn died at on February 29 The service was conducted by the Rev Harvey Van of Iht Guelph Christian Reformed church and interment was in Rock wood cemetery Pallbearers wire Art Pinder Peter Memdertsma John Vnnder Lee Joseph Drenters John Kranen clonk and Ted Hopkins Mrs came from Holland to Canada She leaves her husband Roelof 3 regular meetings were held in the legion auditorium and two executive meetings in members homes We have a membership of Including five outoftown members The average attendance at meetings was Membership was divided into six groups each group being responsible for programs and lunch during the year Our annual Christmas bazaar In November was our only moneymaking project during the year It was successful financially enabling us to do considerable work In the community and fulfill our obligations to provincial and national headquarters hampers At Christmas In cooperation with the Rotary Club sixteen hampers of food with toys were distributed Members assisted the Canadian Cancer Society and drive Eight classroom flags were presented to Speyside School and one large flag each to and Stewarttown Schools A new fifty dollar bursary was presented to a grade twelve student as well as the Clara fifty dollar bursary to a grade thirteen student both of which are furthering their studies The IODE cup was presented at the Music Festival which has become North Association for Creative and Performing Arts Carry flags Flags were carried In the Remembrance Day and Decoration Day parades Members planted geraniums at the graves of veterans and deceased chapter members The Second ViceRegent placed a wreath at the Cenotaph In November Our sick were remembered with cards and flowers and one member baby received a spoon Through the enthusiasm and Hospitals get more support Count hospitals receive increased support from Halton County Council At their regular meeting recently council agreed to Increase support by changing the grant formula from per bed to one third of approved on capital expansion Georgetown District Hospital will be the first to benefit from the scheme when they erect expansion this year County Councils share of the cost will be OH omnia Under the formula tfat county would not nave paid any thing towards the expansion became no extra beds are involved The-
