Cripps of R Milton recently of Hal ton Centennial Manor died on Monday March 1972 at Milton Hospital in his year Mr Cripps born In England November came to Canada in May with his wife and three sons their three doubters beint bom in Canada he retired from active farming years ago he learned to drive a car or the first time and at the age of 72 started a most enjoyable hobby oil painting Since then he completed over paintings One of his paintings DATSUN 1200 Fastback dune at the age of SO captured two first prizes at Milton Fair one year and was judged best picture in the show Mr Cripps resided in Milton for the past 35 years and for many years was an elder at St Paul United Church His wife Violet Cham s him almost eight years ago He is survived by one son Sydnej of Toronto and three daughters Mrs Fergus of Acton Violet Mrs Henry Arnold of Milton and Frances Mrs Roy lyonslof Elmira Two sons Fred and Henry predeceased him funeral service conducted Huincr was held from the McKersie Funeral Chapel in Milton with interment at Evergreen Cemetery Milton Mr sin grandsons were pallbearers Don Id Arnold of Milton Fred Arnold of Kilbride John lons of Charles of Ronald Plant of Hornb and John Barber of Mr was well known throughout Hal ton for his work with the New Democratic Party He campaigned unsuccessfully for election to Hal ton federal seat in 1965 and again in 19GS as an and had earlier contested the federal seat in West York for the CCF In 1945 and 1W9 He belonged to the CO- later the for close to years Buys company Born in Colborne Township near where his father was a farmer he moved to Toronto in 1923 and attended Technical School He graduated from University of Toronto in chemical engineering in and worked with two Toronto firms as a researcher plant foreman and sales engineer until 1948 when he purchased Chemicals a chemical manufacturing He moved hi firm to Milton in 1957 and opened the business in a shop the rear of his home Margaret St his work he travelled extensively in Canada and USA His concern for the small businessman prompted him to author several briefs and pamphlets on taxation and he also wrote briefs on religious subjects He was active in Milton Chamber of Commerce for several years and was the group president in 1962 He also served on Milton Planning Board for six years five of those years as chairman He was clerk of session at Knox Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school there for many years until he became ill about two years ago Active In church He had been ordained as an elder In the Presbyterian Church while attending Church in Swansea In 1950 He had served in that church as an elder and as superintendent of the Sunday school Both his father and grandfather had been active church workers and he followed in their steps A member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario he was also a professional member of the Chemical Institute of Canada His business connections also involved memberships In the Pest Control Operators Assoc and the Funeral Service Association Surviving are his wife the former Muriel Wilson sons Brian Heights New Jersey and Paul of Toronto and a Liu elite r Ruth at home one brother John of and a gr Mark David Service Tuesday funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon Knox Church with the Rev John Murray officiating At Mr Kcrniejiun request It was a service of witness to the resurrection rother than a memorial service Knox College theology student Gordon Timbers read the Old Testament lesson and Clerk of Session Kenneth Marshall read the New Testament lesson The Knox Malt Quartet including David lackie Cameron Wilson Neil and sang twice during the service and church workers Armstrong Jim Schofield Mac Elliot Art Wilson Kenneth Marshall and Gordon Timbers Orkney pioneer Richard Near passed away March at Alberts at the age of Mr Near was born In Erin township in 1887 and went west with a harvest excursion in 1908 He filed for land in 1909 and broke land with oxen Mr Near took an active part in the development of the Orkney district from that time on He was first secretary for the founding of the school in 1912 He was on the first committee to organize the Orkney Presbyterian church the same and retired as church secretary treasurer after When the Orkney Athletic Association was formed in 1922 Mr Near was elected the first president and he also held that position for 40 years He served as councillor for the Carbon municipality from to 1930 He was also president of the Orkney Municipal Telephone Co for 27 In 1971 he received his star In recognition of his years as a member of Carbon Masonic Lodge During the and he spent several winters in Ontario with his sister Mrs Fred West and enjoyed renewing acquaintances with old friends and relatives In he married Marjorte Vernals a retired school teacher and they lived in while he carried on farming till last year They visited in Acton last October The funeral service was in United
