MiniComment The Free Press went on record as supporting the efforts of Acton deputy reeve G McKenzie and Esquesing reeve Tom Hill In getting more public health nurses to serve the North Halton area Now the situation has been relieved by the hiring of three more nurses which will bring the complement of nurses in North Halton from four to seven we would like to congratulate the Community Health Services committee of county council for their recognition of the fact that health services In the North left much to be desired albeit with much prod ding from McKenzie and Hill In turn the bouquets should go to Mrs Alma who spoke out on the need despite ominous warnings from those afraid to rock the boat The situation has improved but constant vigilance must be exercised to ensure the north of the county is not deprived of services Gossips are often caught in their own mouth traps Many wellmeaning citizens continue to save silver foil with the impression they are helping blind people Silver foil from cigarette packages has no value and cannot be exchanged for dog guides Is the official word from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind If you are asked to collect silver foil check teachers Dan McLean and Tom Patience in the election with votes against S3 and for McLean and Patience respectively His militancy in the teachers cause has never been questioned but methods have been subject to severe criticism from some members of the federation Certainly he has added to negotiations which the Board Education recognizes Have you heard about the clever father who got his son to mow the lawn by telling him the car keys had been dropped in the grass Youth projects good ideas There has been some criticism of local young people who took the federal government at its word applied for and obtained Opportunities for Youth grants According to critics there should be no grants They arc too generous and not policed properly to ensure that all the funds ore spent they should be Others think they rob todays youth of the initiative to look for Jobs In the marketplace There may be some substance to these complaints but we commend rather than deplore the fact that young people in this town and district had the initiative and desire to create their own summer employment and at the same time provide new services Adults who criticize the grants should keep their own hands clean Who for instance turned back the provincial tax rebate when it was available The federal government has given grants to some pretty suspect First prowl in the jungle Photos by K Back issues of ACTON FREE PRESS PHONE Business and Editorial Off tee organizations In its to keep the youth of the country working through the summer months but It is hard to criticize local projects The idea of a farmers market for Acton which would give district agriculturalists an opportunity to sell local produce Is excellent from a consumers standpoint It should also attract business to the towns business Properly handled It could well be a yearround boon to the town assume more importance around which local commerce could build There is going to be fl considerable amount of work Involved organizing Ihe project although the market Itself will only be a one day affair Saturday and then for only a portion of the day Another group of young people will receive to clean up the school creek bed and control erosion along its banks tying the plan In with pork development This will no doubt reawaken the larger dream of parks board in creating a parks green belt from the band hall to Fairy Lake and why not from the lake dam to the property on Main St If the area Is cleaned up and grass planted and maintained we would have one of the finest park networks in the country with lots of room for more development The land now is mainly a weed farm Probably the biggest disappointment of the federal program however was Its failure to approve a grant for members of Acton Citizens Band to teach music through the summer months It was proposed to teach beginners in their own homes one hour a day The scheme would have been Imaginative and practical enough to benefit instructors and beginners And this is the area where we fault the grant givers They could have included It In their estimates Otherwise we think the grants are an excellent way of teaching todays youth about responslbllty and initiative War on litterbugs 75 years ago Taken from tbe Issue of the Free Press Thursday June Amid the cheers and hurrahs of a large and representative gathering at the Central depot at Ottawa last they cost he persisted About three hundred dollars she said Oh said the boy Thats not much considering how long they last Environment Minister James has declared a war on Utter Before the summer is out Mr Auld says he hopes every citizen of Ontario will be conscious of the consequences of his carelessness with trash Translating this to the local level Mr Auld already has a battle on his hands Town workmen the town spanking clean for the long Victoria Day holiday weekend Streets were swept and the main business section looked as tidy as we have ever seen it By Monday morning the trash throwers had littered the streets with pop cans wrappers cigarette packages butts Do you occasionally have the feeling that youd like to stand up preferably in public place and scream Stop the world I wanna get off This urge which is becoming compulsion seems to be hitting me more often lately Perhaps Its the first faint symptom of senility Twenty years ago when our kids were babies and was leading the hectic 73hour a week life of a weekly editor I accomplished a great deal I still found time to play the odd game of poker and odd is the word catch opening day of the trout season get in a few rounds of golf a week see the latest movie play with the kids and tell them bedtime stories and fight with my wife Today the kids are grown up and gone and my weekly chores have been pared to a reasonable number of hours Yet I find myself so beleaguered that I havent played poker for five years havent wet a line or sliced a drive this spring havent seen a movie for a year and a half and scarcely have tune to fight with my wife Dont say it Hes getting old This is pure malice I can still outdance and out- drink most twentyyearolds I was going to add out fight But lets put it this way I can still outrun any coward my age or up to ten years younger I can still swim a hundred yards in half an hour I can walk a block in twenty minutes with time out for catching my breath I can hit a golf ball yards with a mere tailwind Dont say it Hes caught up In a social whirl Thats pure imagination The only social whirl around here Is trying to decide whether we should go over and visit Grandad or ask him to come and visit us and an assortment of odd trivia dredged up from cars and trucks Mr has said that through advertising in newspapers on radio and television on posters and billboards he will introduce a remarkable pollution control device the troshcan Weve got news for you Mr The trash can has long been discovered The problem is getting people to use it Some people will go out of their way to look for a trash can Others simply liirow their litter wherever and when they please Last week our reporter Bill Smiley No its something else What In the world of all that is ridiculous Is happening in the prime of my life when I should be coasting a little after years of uphill pedalling Its the rotten world thats what it Is The clanged thing is flying around faster and faster on Its axis whatever the scientists may say Thedays are getting shorter and shorter the years are flipping by like somebody shuffling cards and everybody Is wishing the weekend would come or saying Thank God Its Friday And all Gods seem to know it The kids are into drugs and sex as though theyd just been Invented and might be out of style tomorrow The trout streams are polluted Its easier to flop and watch an old movie on television with fortysix commercials than to venture into the dark theatre and become involved I play an anemic and safe game of bridge instead of an erratic and brilliant game of poker The golf courses are so crowded it lakes all day to play a round And even playing around is no fun any more Everybody Instead of viewing it with the delighted horror of a generation ago has an instant analysis of the whole affair in pseudopsychological terms Lorraine Hoot described an Incident on her lawn where a young girl on a chartered bus threw the remains of her lunch out on the grass Fortunately the lady of the house was around and handed it back to the embarrassed young lady What can be done about the litterbugs Wc dont know Besides education we would recommend that persons caught littering be sentenced to one day of supervised picking up of ail the litter around town Maybe then they would get the message It used to be fun to fight with my furnace man the beast Often it won but at least I had the satisfaction of giving it a few good belts with the coal shovel Try that with your friendly oil dealer and youll wind up with a lawsuit Everybody is sick to death of taxes going up however cleverly dis guised of politicians who seem more concerned with scoring a point for or against than in leading of the lousy postal service of the growing army of slobs who diddle the rest of us and live on unemploy ment insurance or welfare The majority of Canadians are sick to death of those darlings of the selfstyled intellectual leaders antiAmericanism lack of a true Canadian culture whatever that is bilingualism a perfect example of the real being conned by the Ideal However dont feel that Im giving up The only people who seem to get ahead these days arc those who dig In their heels the garbage collectors posties and cops who are now making a decent and in the opinion of many an indecent wage the farmer who refuses to sell out to a corporation because he believes in what hes doing the odd teacher who refuses to be shut up by a smothering administration Perhaps if wc all dug in our heels a bit the world would not be going to hell In wheelbarrow Or going around so fast Im willing How about you Maybe too many of us feel that were a voice in the wilderness Christ the gears to the devil And see what happened Maybe I sound disgruntled Im not Im as as they come And one of the main reasons is that Ive just learned that my favorite uncle at the age of is getting married to a broth of a girl of As Jewish writers have it I
