A The Acton Free Press Wednesday showing By Code Maxwell The challenge of OFSAA Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations is always present In the Secondary Schools and this year was no exception as Steve van Fleet made an excellent showing with his Javelin His first throw gave him an unofficial 2nd In the list of winners and his next throw gave him a fifth ribbon This Is no small feat since there were competitors from Ontario high schools participating In the 77event meet This accomplishment after many months of persistent training plus the coaching of Bruce Andrews was noted by the scouting of some of our friends south of the border Steve has had several scholarship offers from American Universities His acceptance of any one of these would mean he would not take grade in Canada but would continue his education in the US and he would be throwing the javelin for an American track SUSAN AND HANK in a students at Acton district high school Friday and field team as of September dramatic scene from the production Lithuania night An audience attended Congratulations Steve by Rupert Brook one of four plays staged by Coles Outstanding athletes named at field day Theatre Night attracts 225 to hs Friday CIGAR CLENCHED FIRMLY between his teeth Rivetts ONeill Robert Wissenz demonstrates his brand of gumshoe action in the thriller A Case for Two Detectives at the high school Friday Coles Photo By Corie Maxwell Axe murders hotel fires and tales from the Old West were part of the activities In last Fridays Theatre Night The program opened on a serious note with a play called Lithuania Shelly Roy who played the mother Susan as Anna and Janis Hilfman the father were an Isolated poor family Each winter barely survived and they were all tired of this sort of existence When a rich stranger Scan Ahearn came along they found their chances of leaving their old life by kitting him and taking his money Atter a gory axe murder the truth was revealed by the Vodka Shopkeeper Maxwell and her son George McPhall The daughter had actually killed her brother Tension relieved A Case for two Detectives relieved the tension by presenting a Sherlock Holmes type of farce A murder had been committed and was being solved In two different ways It was the armchair detective Van played by Henry Van versus the stereotyped cigar smoking action detective Rivets Nell Van believed that Annie the Irish maid Jonla Hilfman was the mUrdcrer while Rivets accused everyone but actually thought that J Edgar Allen Bob Krul and his flashy Junior Adair with SO Junior boy Bill McGillivray decided that the grade law students needed a rip to the Witts- to action We at climbed into cars and drove to the Holton Courts which are located in Milton When we got there we walked in and expected to be entertained as in a Perry Mason movie Everything went well at first because of a very kind judge He gave us 15 minutes of his time and explained about the different of courts to us and another group of about 50 yount children As a matter of fact he continued to explain and spell out the procedures throughout the beginning of the trial Not fit As I said earlier we expected to be entertained and were disappointed when we sat for two hours and watched while two juries were picked As soon as the began we were asked to leave because the judge felt the cast- not fit for the children to hear We left and went to another part of the building to the civil and watched them pick another jury i 1 was surprised at the long and involved formalities which the court was forced to go through I fed there was a great waste of tunc in that courtroom Amongst other things that I felt was wrong was the type of person the lawyers picked for the jury Almost all the people that came before the defence lawyer seemed to be respectable well off elderly gentlemen or middle- aged family men Twenty per cent of our population is between the ages of IB and and only two people were seemingly from that group I per cent of our population is made up of women Six women were In court and not one of them was chosen for Jury duty I felt the trip was a good one and taught me a lot about formal court procedure By Maxwell Last week the grades and 13 French classes had two days of oral French testing This open classroom method of speaking enables the student to hear some one else talk French It also allows for another evaluation of a student George Monro of social sciences for County and Phil Kettle a consultant In social sciences were the binding forces bringing social science teachers of the high school and surrounding feeder schools together These two men made the first in a series of presentations on innovative teaching methods at the high school The Inquiry Method for teaching social studies was dealt with and a demonstration and explanation was given for the benefit of the teachers A general discussion followed These programs will be held In an effort to organize and coordinate a standard program of teaching from the kindergarten stage to grade 13 Don forget about the Concert on Thursday June at the Acton Community Centre The two groups featured are Syrinx and Breathless This is the last event of the school year and Last Monday featured an airplane ride over the Niagara escarpment for any interested A students Their route roughly and roughly it was took them over Hamilton part of the northern United States St Catharines Niagara Falls and back to Toronto Last week Mr K Black geography teacher at AH attended a leadership conference in Alliston sponsored by the Halton County Board This conference dealt with planning and organizing an integrated school system from kindergarten to grade 13 An Integrated school system is when the different grades from kindergarten to grade 13 plan together They do this according to the same philosophy and coordinate a program in which all grades co operate with each other In teaching methods and also that which is taught J Bray was one of the co ordinators of this program and his committee has been planning the conference since last Oc tober were people participating in the three day workshop and they divided them selves into four different groups accomplice Miss Marlow Is were the real criminals In truth he killed them Unfortunately both detectives were wrong Who did if The butler of course Thompson Four reactions A Still Alarm was next on the agenda This play depicted the reactions of four people to a hotel fire Two women who were guests in he burning hotel considered It only a nuisance Two of the firemen who had come to the room were waiting for room service to bring a key to open the room next door so would be able to enter and put out the fire Everyone was very calm and the stupidity of sophistication was clearly portrayed Matthews Theresa Steele Anne Smith Trevor and Helen all carried this play to a successful climax Western satire The Death and life of Sneaky Fitch was a satire of the Old West Sneaky Fitch Hank was the town bum and everyone hated him because he was a coward and he didn uphold the Code of the West In reality Sneaky was a very likeable character Doc George McPhall changed Sneaky whole life though after giving him some sleeping Each group was given a fictitious school situation and they had to decide how to change the present system into an integrated program Each group gave a detailed report of their studies over the three day period Late hours were kept and much detail and work were put into the report The participants had to look at the system from every aspect and they had to consider every problem Mr Black thought it was one of the best workshops that he has ever attended medicine Everyone thought he was dead but after he sat up in his coffin everyone considered him Immortal The whole town was afraid of him Including Gibson the fastest gun in the West Unfortunately the good folk this type of person one who does not uphold The Code to be running around on the loose so they tnoe good folk decide to go against The Code of the West themselves and dispose of this undesirable character Finally Maroon Cathy Ashley thedancehall girl shot him In the back and thus the final death of Sneaky Fitch attend These four plays drew a crowd of 225 people and approximately to the Theatre Arts department Mr and the actors and actresses all got a big hand from the audience who displayed real at the acting of the group Sansom theatre Arts teacher felt the plays were quite a success and promises next year will be even
