Varied opinions on shopping downtown Last week reporter Dave Pink asked downtown merchants for their opinions on the Acton business section This week Dave Interviewed shoppers along the town main stem to get their opinions on shopping in Acton end asked for suggestions on improving facilities Next week well find out what Is happening in other nearby towns and maybe have some suggestions By Dave Pink Acton downtown merchants are losing the patronage of a growing number of local residents of a random sampling of town shoppers seemed to Indicate this week The Free Press poll taken on Mill St was Intended to reach those people who shopped regularly on Acton a main street and could offer opinions on what would make Mill St more attractive to the shopper Of people polled six said they shopped for all their needs in Acton downtown area Some of these said they go elsewhere occasionally where there la a larger selection These shoppers told the Free Press they liked the congenial service of local merchants and were pleased by the relaxed Onewoman said that meeting and chatting with friends along the main street was all part of her shopping day and stated that Acton stores cater more to a person her size than do the stores in other shopping centres Some of those who loyally patronize local businessmen criticized the appearance of the downtown area commenting on the condition of the older buildings and voicing an opinion against sidewalk sales Groceries only Othershoppers mentioned they were only on Mill St for grocery shopping said the appearance of the main street was a big factor in deciding to shop elsewhere A Mill St store manager blamed the appearance of the buildings on a few Mill St property owners who seem indifferent to the condition of the stores One local shopper would like to see more uniformity among the downtown stores Sidewalk sales drew criticism from many of the shoppers questioned One mother accused the sidewalk sales of limiting space making It almost impossible to wheel a baby carriage through the downtown area on busy days A large majority of those who shopped elsewhere claimed they got better selection as well as the convenience of one stop shopping One shopper told the Free Press she was frustrated with the local stores lack of choice She said she always goes elsewhere because she knows Acton stores won t have what she wants Most people interviewed realized it cost more money to shop out of town but considered the selection and convenience as compensation When asked what would make Mill St more attractive those polled suggested something be done to remedy the parking problem Many thought it would be possible to park cars along side streets and prohibit parking on Mill St from Main to John Sts Wider streets These people thought wider streets would attract more people and be less of a hazard to motorists One woman questioned why delivery trucks were allowed to park on the main street and wondered why they t use the back entrances All shoppers thought the planters of flowers were a good thing and suggested more be placed along Mill St to brighten it up Two women suggested a Main to
