Acton entrant pageant 1200 Fastback By Wendy Thomson I havent been saying too much about horses lately as Friend- Jenny la doing such a good job In her column and I wouldnt want the paper to become overhorsed but Inquiries have been coming in When city folk move to the country it seems their first thought is to get a horse We managed to lost years without one then chanced across a round saucy little pony red in spite of his name Earl Grey with big dark eyes that peered out from a shaggy grey mane We were lost Son Jim lost Interest In Earl fairly soon since his favorite pasltlme is taking things apart and we drew the line at the pony David then three years old never did develop more than a passing interest since his hearts desire was a tiny knockkneed one iau when cool autumn Mexican Burro a little began to blow leaves around to seriously thinking about It Then I began to have pictures of our horse arriving when I was about TO and a shaky old Gord helping a shaky old me up a shaky old ladder on to this pretty prancing thing So one fall when cool autumn sparrow to feed hay to and hug With Carl his hugs didnt come Srcsatisf ordund got Into one of my restless moods and decided I wont to grow old grace fully wanted to bounce through more satisfying Bellyspin Since Beth did most of the chores my first real contact with Earl came one winter day when leading him from barn to pad dock I guess the open length of driveway was calling and was too much to resist It didnt take much of a Jerk to pull me off balance and away we went through the snow me flat on my bellyattheendofthcrope thinking hopefully hed have to stop if I didnt let go but when he did It was just to start running in circles with me spinning still on my stomach In the middle About the third time around I thought Now this Is ridiculous and let go At that the pony gave me a reproachful look for spoiling the fun and trotted back to the paddock where my mare was watching the whole thing with amazement And that was Just the beginning of many adventures with Earl Grey but this spring we took stock and decided Beth needed a bigger horse So now Earl is living a lazy and contented life at Kumca in Hornby and Beth has a quarterArab half Morgan filly Our second equine acquisition was my mare Black Velvet We d joked about having a horse of my own one day but never got Bouncing thru 30s And that Just about what Ive been doing Well not quite I ve been bouncing ail right but not entirely with flair Velvet was never what could be called a good horse She wants to fly and resents sedate strolling So we vc flown here and flown there over the past four years Two and a half years ago she redeemed herself immeasurably by producing twins a pound buckskin filly called Sparrow and a pound chestnut colt finally named Shawnee after months of deliberation And many people must remember all the stories I wrote about them They were our first born yard babies and everything was quite new and fascinating to us Veliet reared them quite ade quately and showed them off proudly to the over 100 visitors they had But then two years ago this week my column was a very short account of finding Sparrow dead hung up in her un breakable nylon halter She was seven months old Overpowering The colt has grown into a very handsome character Being a twin doesn seem to have stunted his growth at all He and Morgiana the have Attractive Bonnie McKenzle of Acton was one of IB charming girls entered In the Miss Oakville pageant last week at the Mall in She and fellow students at Sheridan college
