Coles Slaw A Canadian passport Is a magic token In Europe opening many doors with a minimum of fuss I had heard this before our quartet made our long planned Junket to seven West European countries All our experiences bore It out Coupled with a Pass which enables the bearers to travel class on the excellent European railway it Is an open ticket to viewing pe at little cost and Inconvenience We expected that the customs men at the various border points would grille us like they did almost everyone else but in most cases they bother to stamp the pass port In some cases they even bother to cast more than a perfunctory glance at the cover Canadians eh they ask with friendly tone Goot or they merely gesture for us to move along throwing a quick wink My wife was a trifle upset If the passports were stamped we could prove where we had been No stamp well we could have swum down the Rhine River and who would know the difference But you swim down the Rhine of course believe me It is too crowded We packed four days Into our Itinerary for a boat trip up the Rhine from Rotterdam in Holland through much of Western Germany ending up In Strasbourg France where because of the low river levels wo arrived too late to catch a connecting train to Munich We wound up taking the local milk train Instead arriving In Munich about in the morning The Rhino Oh yes It must have more traffic on It than any river in the world winds through solemn farm lands and some of the world most picturesque fairy book country There are thousands of barges on the river carrying every conceivable form of merchandise new cars to logs from the upstream country of Switzerland Many of the barges are family owned and believe It or not ship This has been going on for years long before Women lib appeared on the scene It seems that river regulations require that each barge and some of them are huge at least one crew member In addition to the captain Since much of the deck work is more suitable for men than women It was Inevitable that the wife should take the wheel while man slogged on the decks This led to the woman becoming an expert at navigation and taking out papers to prove it The man occasionally takes turns at the wheel In a river which must require some of the trickiest navigation in the world because tho river bears a constant stream of traffic that is hard to believe We suppose tho husband on a barge such as this must utter some such banality as The opinions of the captain are not necessarily those of the management The children of these marriages They help on the barge too There arc barge schools which the children attend where they take the academic subjects Frequently you see anywhere fromsix to ten barges bunched on the river followed by a floating school where the children remain until closing time rejoining their own ship where they have their own chores it is an entirely different way of life but the barge families thrive on it Judging by the cheery waves they gave our floating tourist ship the Holland Emerald a ship we were assured by the captain was virtually Pastimes on trips like ours consist of loafing and eating with occasional side trips by bus to different shore locations for sight seeing with a prearranged meeting place with the ship somewhere further For Instance we boarded a bus one af temoon and Journeyed to Worms and Heidelberg passing through the rich vine yard country of German Worms of course is where Martin Luther was summoned before the Diet of Worms an assembly of the princes nobles and clergy of Germany and called upon to recant Refusing to do so he was pro- but allowed to depart in safety There a statue of Luther in the city square but the dominant feature of the place is still the targe Romanesque Catholic cathedral built in the century which found too cold for my liking also a Luther door in the old where the founder of the Protestant fa Is said to have used to leave the dry It is interesting to note that Luther himself protested the name Lutherans given to his lowers as his intention bad not been to form a new church but to reform abuses in the existing Church Heidelberg is another romantic German city where the 13th century romantic castle is the focus for tourists Mainly an ivydad rum nestling high above the town in a park It has some outstanding examples of early and late Renaissance architecture but the big attraction for many is the Heidelberg Tun a huge barrel 36 feet in length and feet In diameter capable of holding WO barrels viae or any other liquid you d like to put in There was wine In it the day we were there and for the German mark equivalent of you got glass full and were allowed to keep the glass Miltons case is weak WHEN THE MAPLES finally release their leaves In the Foil of the year a trick they have perfected over many thousands of yoajs It provides a playground for young fellows like Robert Jennings who has appeared in this space before His father is on the other end of the camera J Photo Editorial Page ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY OCTOBER Principals with principle The end of the 1973schooI year will be a turning point in Acton s educational history with the simultaneous resigna of the towns two public school principals The dean of Halton County principals Pat announced he would be retiring last week This was followed by a similar resignation from the principal of the M Bennett school Elmer Smith this week Mr his been principal of the Robert Little school for succeeding Miss Bennett one who had left an indelible mark on this community in an era when philosophy was being evolved His record on the job his been a mark above excellent and his methods widely followed by other schools in the county We remember an inspector telling that the then Acton public school was always on a Hallon tour for visiting educators because of its fine standards and firm discipline It was considered a model school both from the standpoint of administration and the quality of education Mr fostered kindly to lively school spirit which tended to show Itself In school competitions such as music festivils special contests and athletic as well as academic excellence When Acton required another school to keep abreast of the surge in popula tion it was inevitable that Elmer Smith would be chosen to take over the principal s post He was the vice- at the one Acton school for a number of years and his kindly dis position and affable manner augmented the methods Principal McKenzie He tackled the principal job with the same firm but always affable manner which had made him very popular with students staff and Heidelberg is also famous for its University the oldest in German and for the capacity the students have for beer This may sound shocking to some but in Germany and Austria beer is the nauonal substitute for water for people of all ages After several litres of it It is easy to understand why Fortunately I was able to sustain myself through this trying period whin we were advised that strange water could possibly upset our delicate constitutions My companions decided they would rather be connoisseurs of the many wines the district is noted for rather than the brew And after trying it I could see why again It had a unique flavor that seemed to complement the German food a fact I also noted in Italy later regard to Italian food But more about food next week Milton Council is convinced that their community occupies special position In the county in the desire to keep Milton and district in a central Halton unit if and when regional government comes to Milton council last week approved a lengthy brief supporting the town s objections to being included a North unit with Georgetown Acton and Nassagaweya They plumped for an area In central Halton which would give residents the autonomy other municipalities arc willing to give up to form a strong block In the North The newest brief says that Milton is the obvious centre of interest for a central Halton area and services would be much better through he central unit THE ACTON FREE PRESS PHONE Bus nessand Editorial Office than through a North Halton unit- Other reasons arc also given supporting the position that Milton is a unique community with a strong sense of identity that should not be disturbed We hove always admired those who did not hesitate to speak out on behalf of their own community who were pre pared to defend its autonomy We admire those who are Milton dnve to achieve a place amongst the Halton giants Burlington However we all know the very same arguments they are using to preserve Milton autonomy in a regional government set up could be ammunition for any of the other communities m North who might be swallowed up in a larger North municipality Georgetown the largest centre in the north has particular reason for deciding It could go it alone Acton with its unique position adjacent to Wellington county and a strong pull towards Guelph has similar argu ments and have always demonstrated hoy could do very well with self government We hope that the Provincial Govern ment Is not hoodwinked by any brief into thinking that Milton is the only community in the county with strong centralist possibilities The other communities involved could just as easily pull the same old rabbits out of the hat and insist they also are unique deserving special treatment Where would that put the case or regional in square Help Canadians help others parent alike in his previous position Often handicapped by lack of facilities he waited patiently until the Z Bennett school received the modern amenities joyed at the Robert Little With two schools in town it was in- there would be competition and a spirit of rivalry but it has always been conducted on a high and friendly level stemming from the attitudes of the two men at the top who remain personal friends and set the same goals generations of Acton students It is true in life that all good things must come to an end but we doubt very much that cither Mr or Mr Smith will choose a life of idle retire ment rhc have chalked up enviable records of community involvement during their in Acton We know when he end of the school year arrives the transition from principal to private citizen will make little difference in this outlook is still some time before they step down but we think this newspaper would be remiss indeed if we did not extend some of the appreciation that is their due from those who have been fortunate enough to have come under their guidance or been influenced by their careers Sick of hearing and reading about the soon to come and when regional government So are we But arc very important issues which mast be covered thoroughly by the if they do their job properly It is refreshing to read that last year Canadian children raised a record in a few short highest percapita UNICEF collection in the world UNICEF committees and individuals around the globe contributed over million for UNICEF work Of this total over 8 million was raised in the Canadian UNICEF campaigns But what is so important about UNICEF Why should we want to fairly phlegmatic in most arc mercurial In their voting They shown that since confederation swinging now behind one party then turning it out for a while then putting it back In power John Die fen swept the country with lite fire and vision at just the right moment Not many years later he even win a convention for leadership of his own party And 1 confess with a slight blush that I m no exception At one time or another I have voted for candidates of all three major parties and would probably have cast a vote lor Social Credit if I ever had a chance and tin rifjit man had been running How about you Have you made up your mind jet or ore you still looking over the held and wishing there were some other alternative such as MaoTse Tung or Guy lmbardo It s hard to choose The present govern mint has not exactly won wild plaudits last four years It has achieved little In cutting expenses and taxes In fighting infl it ion in creating employment and In buying Canada back from foreign investors It doubtful whether any other party would vc done better How about the Prime Minister Can he it on his own as he did last tune rom my tiny vantage point It looks is though he running scared Last trip around he had an enormously favorable press He was something new and exciting a with a sharp mind and a charming shrug The women loved him But now he an old married man with a family the press has soured and you don t hear word charisma being tossed around He s deadly serious in his He is resorting for the first time to the old backroom politics with what look tribute towards its Roils AUNICEI field representatives says that what distinguishes from other groups working in the field of development is the concentration on the hum in dimension When people build new factories we make sure they don t forget to build schools and health centres near them We care about the people who will be flooded out and rebuilt when a newdam is built for instance while engineers Smiley suspiciously like election bribes to various parts of Ihr- country What would he do if hi lost I think he d up marbles and go home Hes always been a winner and he has none of the skill the patience and the dozedness that make a goo opposition leader Well then there honest Bob Stanfleld He oozes integrity and Is gent if only he take a course in public speaking He d probably make a sol but uninspiring prime m roster Hut is it worth it to change the whole government for a fellow whose slogan is about as fatuous and feeble as you d find Do Better Belter than what Better than nothing a good Tory might retort ven that isn t enough On re something I can stand about head of the smarmy He has only one tune And he has that old fashioned belief that there a Big Business rap si forever under the bed of that perennial spinster the Canadian social st That leaves Ileal Caouette Theresa real firebrand for you I d rather listen to one of his speeches even though I can barely Mow it than any given number by Pierre Bumbling Bob and wholesale David only care about dam building and all those damn things people afflicted by disasters and the thousonds who hunger each cares about them They are not your children Or mine But they ire someone children By helping Canadian children with you ore also helping someone else children If I were a rural renchConadlan Id certainly say Dat Is de bet llihtn what in the world does one do It for the faithful of any party Theyd vote for an ope If ho were running on the party ticket Some of them are so rigid that they I even vole for a woman Bui the rest of us are faced with the same old the government desperately up the old levee ami the others all howling that they will do this and that and thus it only it makes us get down to the local level and take a look at the candidates trying to disassociate them from their leaders In my riding we have three There the incumbent a Tory a doctor an elderly man who is master at politicking and never a fiftieth anniversary or a ninetieth in the riding We have a handsome youngish lawyer who has done a lot of work in municipal and service club affairs sings at weddings And we have a university student full of ideals on 1 somewhat blinkered when it comes to reality Three generations And do you know who Is going to win elderly doctor who has been years in parliament and should have retired grace fully after making a mark on the face of our history that could be wiped off with a Because this is a Tory riding and that s It The student will get his lumps the and the old gentleman will get the gold ring Well that elections and I can even tell wife how to vote because she thinks is still cute and Margaret is beautiful My liberals back in with a minority government Back Issues of The Free Press 75 years ago
