and salaries fuels and antipollution measures as the causes for the raise in rates Affected by the raise are the province s municipal utilities large Industrial customers served directly by Ontario Hydro and some 600 rural customers Acton Hydro Commission chairman Wilf said increases will likely have to be absorbed by the customers He understood that Ontario Hydro would likely make It obligatory far commissions to pass the increase on to consumers The Acton commission has withdrawn funds from a reserve when Ontario Hydro has announced increases on other occasions rather than pass them on to customers Tap reserve fund Gathercole said the rate increases will not be sufficient alone to meet rising costs and that withdrawals will have to be made from the reserve fund Generally speaking this with Whiting with 20 and with votes Halton was one of ridings In Ontario the Liberals lost to the Tories In all the Liberals lost 27 seats in this province Early Tuesday morning it appeared the Liberals could form a minority government with 108 seats while the PC held 107 and four seats had yet to be decided NDP had scored 29 wins and the Socreds 14 Fate known early In Whiting fate was marked early in the evening Just minutes after the polls closed the tally boards in committee rooms around the county showed OConnor leading with to Whiting s and a Whiting had won the first poll reporting but soon trailed That set the trend and it never changed By eight clock O Connor had moved to a lead of votes An hour later that lead swelled to 1 700 and by 25 p jn the tally showed Whiting behind by votes The 24yearold school teacher and candidate Carolyn claimed of the votes that were cast About 300 Liberal supporters were gathered at the Pine Room in Arena to hear Whiting acknowledge defeat The glum dis crowd con trasted to the vibrant ecstatic group that had celebrated Whiting a victory In the same room in 1968 we hoped for but we have to accept what has happened I do You re the
