Saturday October 21 and over 200 guests were on hand at the of the Highlands in Gait to extend their congratulations Mr and Mrs Vincent of Owen Sound the former Gladys Holmes of Acton were the happy enthusiastic supporters Runnerup Jake Slinger a bearded Liberal businessman from Guelph polled votes while softspoken Dr M McCready only lady in the five way contest received 7050 Gareth Blythe the Communist candidate hod 165 votes and the MarxistLeninist Terry polled 66 ballots Hales up for Parr The Wellington PC Candidate has his own Madame knitting message- Mrs Parr knitted the Incumbent show the Grits how an election Is won Mrs Parr was publicly honored for her work with a gift during the victory celebrations at the headquarters of the Conservative party It was obvious from the first few results that came into election headquarters on Mac- St In Guelph that Alf Holes was going to march back Into the House of Commons with little or no difficulty The first polls showed Hales with to 1355 and 989 The pattern stayed that way throughout the night with Hales putting more distance between himself and the other candidates as the results arrived He was at his Street head quarters shortly after eight oclock where a large number of supporters were whooping it up as results were posted on the boards It was the first time we ever won St Patricks ward Hales said with satisfaction In a victory speech to the crowded head quarters He gave much of the credit to the organization headed by campaign manager Albert Fish which encompassed an estimated BOO volunteer workers Dedicated workers Never in my experience have I had such an enthusiastic dedicated committee Hales said recalling six other previous campaigns beginning with his first victory in 1957 He was hard pressed in the last election in 1968 but emerged vtctor by over votes when liberals were sweeping across the province Mondays victory saw the Hales ship take all but five of the polls in the riding First to publicly concede was Liberal Jake who followed by his wife and Liberal entourage arrived at Conservative headquarters around and shook hands and traded compliments McCready an old friend of the Hales family and the candidate followed halfanhour later Both losers agreed It was an Interesting and fascinating cam paign for neophytes that the tone of the campaign never descended to name calling or got bitter Hales said he was at a loss about what to do about the first time voters in the years of age bracket but there is no doubt where it went he declared pointing to the PC support on the board He gave much of the credit to his organizers David Garnet and Donna Artuso for the youth support All the Hales family was there including son Don and his new bride from Illinois about miles south of Chicago where he attends the University of Illinois Hales singled out organizers Tyler Wheeler and Murray Coxe from Eramosa Township for their work at organizing the Con servative campaign He was also pleased that Beverly township had given him a majority although he pointed out that the township was oriented towards Gait and rather than to He felt that his presence there and at where he made himself
